World Giving Index 2013: A global view of giving trends

The USA is again the most generous nation according to the fourth edition of the World Giving Index which looks at charitable behaviour across the world, involving more than 130 countries. The World Giving Index score is based on an average of three measures of giving behaviour – the percentage of people who, in a typical month, donate money to charity, volunteer their time, and help a stranger. The three behaviours are also looked at on an individual basis within the report. The United States’ return to the top of the World Giving Index is due mainly to the fact that helping a stranger is more commonplace here than in any other country in the world. The United States ranks third globally in terms of volunteering, and 13th in terms of donating money. Three countries tie for second place this year – Canada, Myanmar, and New Zealand. Other countries featuring in the Top 10 are Ireland (5th), the United Kingdom (6th), Australia, the Netherlands (8th), Qatar (9th) and Sri Lanka (10th). Myanmar’s second place in the World Giving Index is mainly due to an extraordinarily high incidence of donating money – 85%.
