Behavioral Interventions in HIV Prevention

The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief II was just passed by congress earlier this year.  It has faced much criticism in the past from several influential organizations for its emphasis on behavioral prevention strategies, such as abstinence and partner reduction.  However, the literature, most of it from developing countries, has consistently and overwhelmingly shown these interventions to be the most successful and cost-effective measures for containing HIV epidemics on a national level.  It is time we overcame petty political differences and embraced the evidence in our evidence to stem the tide of HIV.
