Evangelists Reading List

A suggested reading list for modern day evangelists.

On The Go Reading List 2008 Compiled by Keith Cook

This list reflects years of avid reading and searching in all kinds of nooks and crannies for just the right books. I have searched dusty basements in Europe for classics and dug into boxes of old books at many a yard sale.

In books I have learned how to preach more effectively and how to lead more like Christ. Books have given me insight into what makes a minister, evangelist, missionary, Christian leader, successful and what brings them to ruin.  In reading great biographies I have seen mistakes many others have made in the past and been amazed at all the faith moments and divine appointments given by our almighty God.

Books more recently have helped me understand this present culture and the daunting task ahead of all God called evangelists. The books listed here are not the only books that I have read or the only good books out there. These are just some suggestions to get you started.

Some of these are hard to find and have been out of print for years. It is amazing that good books seem to be read by few and fluff or shallow books hang around forever. Look at used or antique book shops for titles out of print and also try online book sellers.

In looking for books for your ministry now and for your future development it is good to have a well rounded library. If you neglect any one area of spiritual growth it can cause other areas to suffer as well. Just because you can preach or teach does not mean you have the ability to lead or administer a ministry.

By prayer, a faithful  study of God’s Word, allowing Godly mentors to instruct you, and by reading and reflecting on what you are learning you can humbly and effectively walk the walk of a faithful servant leader.

The well read and well rounded evangelist should have numerous books to assist in Evangelism;  Theology of Evangelism, History of Evangelism, Evangelistic Leaders Biographies, Lifestyle Evangelism, Local Church Evangelism, Apologetics, Non-Christian Beliefs, Evangelistic Preaching, Mass & Proclamation Evangelism.

Next the evangelist should have an extensive library that focuses on the area of Missions; Missionary Biographies, Missions Stories, Society and Culture, History, Communicating Cross Culturally.

Do not neglect the Personal Side of Ministry; Personal Life – Spiritual Disciplines, Family, Spouse, Friendships, Emotions, Pride. Abuse and Addictions.

Bible Dictionaries, Commentaries, Specific Books of the Bible study books, Bibles in different versions, and Exegesis series should also be included. I love the old books by H.A. Ironside, Donald Grey Barnhouse, Gene Getz.

A final area that will bless any evangelist and assist you in getting to the next level in your ministry is in the area of Christian Leadership; Servant Leadership, Discipleship, Mentoring, Management, Networking.

Top Twenty Five

You must read the following books to get a clear and balanced view of all the aspects of being a modern day evangelist. Passion without purity is pitiful and works without wisdom is worthless. Knowing how to live the faith life and  understanding the importance of the spiritual disciplines has been a major factor in all the great men and women of God.
