The overall amount given to charity in the UK has fallen in 2012. Against a backdrop of tough economic times, evidence indicates that fewer people are giving. Many are giving less. The overall impact is that giving fell by 20% between 2010/11 and 2011/12. It is too early to know whether this is the beginning of a trend or a one-off; a blip in an otherwise enduring relationship between the public and charitable giving. The fall in giving has a serious impact on charities in the UK with many having to close down or reduce their services.
