Global Trends 2030: Alternative Worlds

Global Trends 2030: Alternative Worlds is a publication of the US National Intelligence Council that aims at providing a framework for thinking about the future. It intends to stimulate strategic thinking by identifying critical trends and potential discontinuities. The report distinguishes between megatrends, those factors that will likely occur under any scenario, and game-changers, critical variables whose trajectories are far less certain. A very interesting reflection on scenarios or alternative worlds that the international community might face is included. The writers emphasise that ‘We are at a critical juncture in human history, which could lead to widely contrasting futures. It is our contention that the future is not set in stone, but is malleable, the result of an interplay among megatrends, game-changers and, above all, human agency. Our effort is to encourage decision makers—whether in government or outside—to think and plan for the long term so that negative futures do not occur and positive ones have a better chance of unfolding.’

It is important that Christian leaders and especially those involved in resource mobilisation take note of this report and reflect on the potential influence of the global trends on the global church. Also how Christians could influence the different trends since we believe in a God who not only controls the trends but also can surprise the world with unexpected events (called black swan events in the publication).
