How do we display Christ in secular media?

In this interview the director of Media Missionary School, Harold Hay asked me the question: “What 3 things do you wish you would have known ahead of time before pursuing a career as a filmmaker in Hollywood as a Christian?”

My question to global Church leaders is, “Can you embrace and support members of your Church working in secular careers in entertainment seeking to live out their walk with Christ among primarily non-Christians?” Do you think Christ as referenced in John 17 would ask us to stay away from messy sinful actors, celebrities (think Lindsay Lohan), filmmakers, and artists solely to protect ourselves from falling into sin? Is Jesus asking all Christians who are involved in media to exclusively produce or participate in only “Christian” media that is created to give all Christians worldwide an “alternative” to worldly secular media? Can’t our lives be, as Paul says, “living epistles” read by all men? Isn’t it true that most often those who respond to the Gospel do so because they “see” Christ living in us?

I think it is time we address the issue of whether the Church can support believers who are willing to live in the World but not be of the world. This applies to all careers, but especially to the Arts and Entertainment.
