Rediscovering the Gospel of Reconciliation

I found your paper very penetrating and challenging, coming as it does from the crucible of your own bitter experience. For far too long, we (evangelicals) have preached an inadequate gospel – majoring almost exclusively on sin as our alienation from God, assuming that when people believe and are reconciled to God, the other alienations will be resolved automatically in the process of discipleship. We are going to have to make clearer in our preaching that although we come to Christ by faith individually, we are born of the Spirit into the family of God where our solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Christ supersedes all previous loyalties. The new believer in Christ should be challenged to renounce traditional animosity toward other people and cultivate a Christlike attitude instead.
