Evangelism and proselytism

One of the issues that I think needs to be dealt with in the Lausanne conversations, but which doesn’t seem to have come up so far, is evangelism versus proselytism.

How do we understand these, and do we know the difference?

My own view is that the Christian faith and Christian evangelism are indicative and not imperative. We say “This is what we do; this is what we do not do. This is what we believe; this is what we do not believe.” That is evangelism. We do not say, “This is what you must do; this is what you must not do.” That is proselytism.

That puts it in a nutshell,

I’ve written <a href=”http://khanya.wordpress.com/?s=evangelism+proselytism” target=”_blank”>more about it on my blog</a>, and an <A HREGF=”http://www.orthodoxy.faithweb.com/evanpros.htm” target=”_blank”>article here</a>.
