While thinking a lot on why focus on the orphan and the widow in particular, (with special reference to the work of my organization in Egypt) I went into Adobe Illustrator and drew a Venn Diagram that I think might pin it down.

What do you think? Does this capture it?

I agree that our graphic captures the spirit of the problem and the solution together, well done!  In America we can walk into any prison (ok it’s not that easy, you need to do some paperwork first) and find that 85 out of 100 of the prisoners are fatherless.  All of them will tell you the stories about growing up without a father and the pain they suffered looking for a father figure.  Most of them will go on to propogate the system.  The solution is to get tehm active in preventing it happening to others.  Many men I know grew up without fathers and have vowed never to let that happen to their children.  Movies like Courageous take a step in the right direction.  Even within the church we have lost the ability to stay in realtionships when they get hard.

In biblical times and in many countries outside the US the loss of a father is a fatal blow to the wife and children who depended on the man for property, money, and social status.  Not so in the US where women can work and own and be independant with children.  Yet here we are seeing the physiological and life stage ramifications of this thinking in its entirity with the aforementioned prison populations and social discord.

I hope that we can get more men to stand up and become the agents of social change before we lose all agency.

Tom,

Well said:

Here we suffer, too, just as you point out. I just saw Don Miller ("Blue Like Jazz") released a new book called "Father Fiction: Chapters for a Fatherless Generation."

I originally did this diagram for Coptic Orphans in Egypt. Egypt has a lot in common with the Biblical culture, and working with the Copts makes me realize why "teh fatherless" and "the widow" go together in the Scriptures. A woman without a husband has no economic power in Egypt, but also carries stigma. She wears black to identify herself as a widow and stays at home. In Egypt a widow is an available woman, and that’s a threat to other women and to society.

In Egypt, it’s interesting to see how through widowhood, injustices against girls and women come together with the injustice of fatherlessness with a very big negative synergy.

When I go back and read the Old Testament, this comes with me and illuminates meanings I never saw.

I have had a long ministry with people who are fatherless for onereason or another and it is amazing tosee just how much the role of father can cause pain to people even after they have become fathers themselves. That is why I find it awesome that God may be father but is also mother as well. My heart breaks for those who have become fatherless and my hope is that we as the church can begin to create family ties with these persons so that they can find peace in knowin that we will be thier fathers and God is thier ultimate father.
