One of the most overlooked aspects of forgiveness is how to ask for it. Asking for forgiveness should not be done according to human wisdom nor simply generated by emotional intensity. Asking for forgiveness should, instead, be based on biblical truth, especially with regard to personal responsibility and esteeming others as more important than one’s self. Any important endeavor of life requires planning, and forgiveness is certainly one of those undertakings.

Thank you for kicking off this post and the subsequent conversations about forgiveness. We try to teach our children even about the difference between saying “I am sorry” which is done, primarily when you cause some infraction against another person as an accident. “I’m sorry” has the power remain in the hands of the one who infringed on the other. Asking “Will You Forgive Me” puts the power in the hands of the person who has been hurt. It is an act of submission, trusting that the other person now can decide to forgive you. This is even good to think about in terms of our relationship with God. Reconciliation is taking it a step further in hopes of healing the relationship.

I have discovered the importants of forgivness and how the Bible speaks about it one example is in (Matt.6:14-15) but, are we to forget ? We had a discussion in my Sunday School Class about forgiving and forgetting. Are we as christian suppose to forgive and forget?

@ Brother_Bernard_:
I don’t think that it is necessarily a good idea to forget once we have asked for forgiveness. When we forget our sins, we run the risk of repeating those sins. While it is important not to dwell on the sins of our past, it is crucial to learn from them and become better people because of our past.

I agree with you wjw88. I think if we forget we run the risk of sinning again withouth learning form our past mistakes. I think it’s important to learn from what we ahve done wrong. In my opinion that is one way we grow.

I agree! I think it is impossible to move forward in our Christian life without asking forgiveness. I know I am unable to forget the sins I’ve committed but I try not to ponder on them. If I focus on my past I will never move forward.

I don’t quite agree that how one ask for forgiveness it to
plan it out. After praying about the situation first, the next thing to do is
just to do it. The bible says if we think our brother has an ought with us, we
need to go to them. It doesn’t say make a plan and execute it. I think some
Christians try to uphold Christian principles in a worldly fashion. I think the
best “how” to ask for forgiveness is the ask God to prepare your mouth with
words of love and prepare the other person’s heart to receive the words and ask
God to set the atmosphere for reconciliation.

@ J_Ruth:
I agree JRuth that there does not have to be a plan for forgiveness. It is a fairly simple process--although I certainly do not want to imply that I believe that simple is the same concept as easy. We ask god for forgiveness, we ask the offended party in sincerity, and then we also have the additional task of being able to forgive ourselves for what we have said, thought or done.

Akarnett, I agree with you and J Ruth. I think the process of gaining forgiveness is not as complicated as some would suggest. In fact, all we have to do is earnestly ask, in faith, without doubting. God is faithful to forgive us. The enemy of God would have us think that it is so difficult to have God’s blessing of forgiveness. My Bible says, Ask and it shall be given.Matthew 7:7

I agree with you. It is very imporant to pray and ask God to intervene in these kinds of situations. When we are genuine in our efforts to avoid hurting people over and over, God honors our prayers, I believe.

How right you are. The other part of forgiveness is not beating up ourselves for the wrong we did to another person. It is important to take responsibility for our actions but at some point we must let it go and move on.
