For the vast majority of years since Gutenberg enabled mass produced written communication, those thoughts which become “published” existed in the mind of an author, being the fruits of that author’s imagination and experience, and generally speaking, good quality writing was a craft which took a lifetime to perfect.
But with the advent of the global digital network, traditional communication has been radically redefined. With microblogging, the trend towards a zero-delay publication of our thoughts continues apace.

McLuhan was certainly a very insightful scholar in the media studies world. Your blog post seems to be dancing around the idea that "the medium is the message" as McLuhan is well-known for saying. I think that looking at how the medium (Twitter or Facebook for example) is changing and shaping society is a healthy and often overlooked, and I think McLuhan would agree, part of evaluating what is going on. In addition to looking at what sort of opportunities and social implications social media technologies bring with them, we also must pay attention to the messages being sent through each medium. If we find a balance with both, then perhaps we can figure out a way to work with technology to create meaningful relationships instead of allowing technology to disconnect us from one another.

@ abenfield:
Thanks abenfield for an unusually thoughtful comment.
Indeed, medium and message go hand in hand.
