Resumo
Um dos maiores grupos de pessoas ”não-ativadas” em todas as nações e continentes são aqueles presentes no local de trabalho, lugar onde a maioria da população do mundo está ativamente engajada no ganho do seu salário para sustentar suas famílias. Dentro de todos os segmentos do local de trabalho, há crentes que têm um relacionamento pessoal com Deus. Alguns são extremamente eficazes para convidar pessoas com quem trabalham para juntar-se à sua jornada; enquanto outros, o trabalho é um lugar onde a fé deles molda suas atitudes, mas não muito. Os campos estão maduros e prontos para a colheita, e no local de trabalho há muitos trabalhadores, mas apenas uma pequena porcentagem está inteiramente engajada na proclamação da esperança para um mundo em busca de esperança.
Embora exista pouca discordância sobre a teologia de ser sal e luz onde somos plantados, a realidade é que não temos a paixão para viver nossa responsabilidade de declarar Jesus Cristo como Salvador. Neste documento, exploramos a questão de onde estamos hoje, destacamos vários exemplos de progressos evidentes do ministério no local de trabalho, e enfocamos as barreiras que existem para não estarmos onde Deus quer que estejamos, a fim de que haja um desenvolvimento sustentável que capacite os crentes a fazer o que Deus os chamou para fazer no local de trabalho.
1. O Contexto (Base Bíblica)
Somos chamados para ir a todo mundo, e isso inclui o mundo no qual Deus nos colocou. Não importa até onde vá nossa esfera de influência, devemos ser sal e luz visível neste mundo. Este chamado não faz distinção entre trabalhadores, profissionais liberais, cristãos em igrejas ou agências cristãs, ou aqueles que têm ocupações comuns. O próprio Jesus exerceu Sua vocação como carpinteiro até chegar a hora de viver dez por cento da Sua vida trabalhando em tempo integral para anunciar o Reino às massas.
Na Bíblia, vários exemplos de heróis mostram como a fé era parte integral na condução de seus negócios no local de trabalho. O elemento comum em todas as histórias é que a jornada de fé e a profissional eram uma só. Fé e trabalho funcionando em mutualidade e interdependência, sem diferença entre trabalho e espiritualidade, uma vez que eles viviam sua fé 24 horas por dias, sete dias por semana (24/7).
A fé de José o sustentou durante as quatro diferentes funções que exerceu (negócios da família, gerente doméstico, administrador de presídio e do serviço público), e também foi um elemento chave para sua ascenção em cada posição que ocupou. Paulo usou sua habilidade como fazedor de tendas para seu sustento missionário e como um meio de alcançar um público que não se dava ao luxo de participar de discussões públicas sobre assuntos relacionados à fé. Daniel atingiu a mais alta hierarquia possível do seu tempo por causa da sabedoria que Deus lhe deu e do seu compromisso firme com os princípios de Deus, mesmo colocando sua própria vida em risco. Todos os aspectos do trabalho destes homens eram ofertas de excelência para Deus.
2. Nossa Situação Atual
Os exemplos bíblicos têm inspirado a criação de várias organizações de alcance diversificado em comunidades em todo o mundo. A habilidade de fazer tentas de Paulo inspirou uma geração de fazedores de tenda que usaram suas habilidades profissionais como ponto de entrada em culturas que normalmente estariam fechadas para o trabalho missionário "formal”. O movimento Business as Mission (BAM – Negócios como Missão) deu um passo à frente ao estimular e preparar empresários para estabelecer negócios legítimos e autossustentáveis em todo o mundo. Estes negócios são exemplos vivos do trabalho de Deus através de indivíduos determinados a viver o Evangelho usando as habilidades dadas por Deus.
Em todo o mundo, homens e mulheres de fé, usando a criatividade e meios vários, têm levado a igreja aos seus locais de trabalho. Existem Estudos Bíblicos que acontecem em locais de trabalho em pequenas empresas e em grandes corporações. Estes estudos são fontes de encorajamento para os que deles participam, e também um lembrete de que viver a fé é uma responsabilidade 24/7 que se estende além dos limites das congregações locais. Muitos destes Estudos Bíblicos foram a porta de entrada para trabalhadores que buscavam a Deus e que O encontraram quando descobriram a importância da fé no dia a dia.
Grupos ou sociedades cristãos com base profissional reúnem pessoas da mesma categoria para serem fonte de encorajamento mútuo e para explorarem os usos efetivos de suas experiências profissionais na construção do Reino de Deus aqui na Terra.
Mas, nem sempre é possível viver a fé alinhada à profissão. Vivemos um paradigma secular-sagrado que separa a Igreja do que acontece no local de trabalho. Neste paradigma, a fé é expressa principalmente dentro das paredes da igreja, ou em igrejas formais e funções organizadas, mas a mesma fé não se estende necessariamente para o local de trabalho, onde os indivíduos passam 40 horas por semana, ombro a ombro com pessoas que vivem em mundos desconhecedores do Evangelho.
Existem muitos “trabalhadores da seara” em local de trabalho que não vivem todo seu potencial na divulgação das Boas Novas. Viver a fé vai além de ser bom exemplo no trabalho. O chamado para fazer discípulos clama para que vivamos a fé deliberadamente, convidando outras pessoas para se unirem a nós, na nossa jornada cristã. A desconexão entre teologia e práxis tem deixado muita gente com o chamado "incompleto”. Trabalhamos porque fomos designados e instruídos por Deus para obedecer ao Seu mandamento original e para declarar as Boas Novas.
3. Sérias Questões
O que aconteceu para nos tornamos tão ineficientes em alcançar bilhões de pessoas que trabalham conosco, que temos um relacionamento pessoal e vivo com Deus? Em ambientes profissionais no Mundo Ocidental, cada vez mais multiétnico, penetrar no local de trabalho representa uma oportunidade sem precedentes para entrar na vida de pessoas de todas as nações do mundo.
Na igreja, fomos ensinados a ir por todo o mundo e, mesmo assim, a igreja é ineficiente na preparação de crentes, no fornecimento de ferramentas e entendimento de como Deus vê o local de trabalho. A maneira como nós vemos o trabalho influencia a maneira como agimos nele. Você vê o trabalho como um mal necessário ou como uma incrível oportunidade? Se o vê como um mal necessário, qualquer coisa relacionada a ele será vista como menos santa.
A fé e o ensinamento que recebemos na igreja moldam nossas atitudes e valores. Mas, infelizmente, numa sociedade cada vez mais pluralista, ser “bonzinho” não é o suficiente. Nós conhecemos o coração dos nossos colegas de trabalho? Será que vemos nossos colegas de trabalho da mesma maneira que Jesus os vê? A sua paixão na igreja alcança sua responsabilidade de convidar pessoas do trabalho para se unirem à sua jornada de fé? O compromisso de nos reunirmos em nossas congregações estende-se ao amor prático pelos nossos colegas e clientes, enquanto nos espalhamos como povo de Deus? Muito da importância estratégica do local de trabalho flui da realidade de que estamos constantemente rodeados de colegas, concorrentes, clientes e consumidores. Diariamente, a maioria de nós tem se engajado em uma conversa com algum incrédulo.
Ensinamento, treinamento e ferramentas são necessários, mas não são suficientes para produzir a colheita que esperamos. Nosso entendimento e nosso coração têm que estar abertos para ver o “secular” como algo que Deus deseja tornar santo. Cada um de nós tem a responsabilidade de fazer isso acontecer, não através da nossa força, mas através do poder do Espírito Santo. Não podemos fazer isso sozinhos, mas podemos fazê-lo em parceria com Deus. Um entendimento sadio de como trabalhar em parceira com Deus no local de trabalho tem um grande efeito para levar a Igreja até ele.
4. Onde Queremos Estar
Num ambiente de trabalho sagrado, existe uma proclamação vibrante de fé alimentada pelo movimento do Espírito Santo. Todos são sustentados pelas orações revigorantes, dinâmicas e alimentadoras da igreja local. O local de trabalho é um dos poucos ambientes nos quais os crentes têm acesso a uma audiência durante 48 horas por semana. O local de trabalho é ideal para incorporar o Evangelho de forma que reflita graça e verdade. Existem poucos locais evangelísticos onde isso seria possível.
Repensar em como nos relacionamos com a igreja tornou-se uma “frase chavão”. Mas, grande parte dos esforços têm sido dirigidos para melhorar o desenvolvimento de programas já existentes, sem tocar em questões fundamentais que abririam portas para ver Deus de maneira poderosa. Existem histórias incríveis de como Deus tem se movido nas igrejas abertas para repensar as Boas Novas.
Repensar a preparação de pessoas que vivem e proclamam sua fé no trabalho ajudaria a mudarmos de estarmos simplesmente no trabalho, para vivermos nossa fé no trabalho. Devidamente preparados com a visão holística de Deus sobre o local de trabalho, os trabalhadores da seara irão se tornar supermotivados. O envolvimento completo do mundo acontecerá quando os trabalhores estiverem completamente envolvidos onde exercer seus ofícios.
Entretanto, este envolvimento completo dos trabalhadores da seara no local de trabalho vai exigir uma mudança da mentalidade na igreja para aceitar os trabalhadores como servos de Cristo em tempo integral. A distinção e a consequente parcialidade existente entre os trabalhadores cristãos em tempo integral, assalariados e laicos, tem de desaparecer com o entendimento do chamado para o ministério.
O maior potencial para crescimento da igreja na próxima geração vem de pessoas que têm fome de relacionamentos significativos no local de trabalho. Nossos trabalhadores estão num campo pronto para a colheita, mas ainda não aprenderam como se envolver efetivamente.
5. Como Chegamos Lá
Infelizmente não existe uma receita universal para chegar onde gostaríamos, mas existem alguns passos fundamentais que podemos tomar para nos aproximarmos daquilo que Deus pretende para nós. Durante anos, a igreja e o mundo secular têm se mantido em esferas separadas. Cada um tem sua própria cultura que separa local de trabalho e igreja.
As pessoas não reagem até que sejam motivadas a responder. Na igreja, ouvimos sobre as Boas Novas e sobre como Deus quer trazer esperança para o mundo. Mas, quando no mundo, na segunda-feira, ninguém convida o colega de trabalho para descobrir a graça de Deus, o perdão e a esperança. Existe falta de paixão pelo bem-estar espiritual dos nossos colegas de profissão. Isso acontece semana após semana, e logo esta dissociação da igreja e trabalho se torna “normal”. A lacuna entre teologia e práxis cresce, criando um paradigma em que a igreja se torna cada vez mais irrelevante para o local de trabalho, e o local de trabalho irrelevante para a igreja.
A dinâmica do domingo e dos dias da semana é a de dois mundos distantes, e não deveria ser. Na maioria das vezes, trabalhadores e pastores vivem paradigmas diferentes. Muitos pastores passam a maior parte de sua vida profissional como pastores em tempo integral e não entendem plenamente a dinâmica do trabalho. Por sua vez, os trabalhadores não fazem o pastor entender como eles passam a semana no local de trabalho. O resultado é que cada um permanece no seu respectivo mundo, encontrando-se apenas nas obrigações da igreja. Os trabalhadores têm a responsabilidade de levar seus pastores para um “tour" ao lugar onde exercem suas profissões, e os pastores precisam se tornar mais proativos para entender o coração e o contexto da cultura do trabalho dos seus membros. O Evangelho não é apenas teologia; é também compartilhar exemplos vivos do que funciona e do que não funciona.
Estudos bíblicos no trabalho, na hora do almoço, oração de segunda de manhã com crentes amigos, discussão no corredor são parte da solução. Conferências no local de trabalho, alguns livros e estudos sobre os ofícios exercidos são ferramentas muito úteis e podem ajudar a começar. Entretando, o problema é que, em geral, as pessoas não integram trabalho e ministério. Não temos exemplos significativos para dar de trabalhadores cristãos que sabem integrar bem sua fé de domingo com o emprego durante a semana. A fé de muitas pessoas tende a ser bem dividida. Poucos crentes fazem constribuições importantes no trabalho, percebidas ou celebradas na igreja aos domingos.
A igreja tem que se tornar viva onde os crentes atuam como profissionais, tornando sagrado aquele lugar. O trabalho tem que ser visto como uma parte integral e essencial do campo missionário de cada um. Duas coisas precisam acontecer para que haja a ponte entre trabalho e igreja: precisamos repensar globalmente o papel da igreja ajudando nossos emissários em locais de trabalho, e repensar o papel do trabalho como motivador do emissário. Sem este repensar deliberado e ações concretas, perpetuaremos o paradigma atual de trabalhadores, fazendo muito pouco pela colheita que está à espera da nossa atenção.
O movimento Business as Mission (BAM – Negócios como Missão) tem demonstrado como precisamos ser muito mais intencionais a respeito de penetrar no local de trabalho. O seu foco no aspecto prático, equipando empresários para que prosperem em seus negócios precisa tornar-se parte da cultura da igreja. Uma característica comum dos integrantes do BAM é que eles são superapaixonados por sua missão e estão prontos a arriscar tudo para conseguir seus objetivos.
O trabalho precisa ser visto como uma oportunidade para missões, um lugar onde podemos levar o dom do amor de Deus para pessoas com quem normalmente não teríamos contato. Para transformar o atual paradigma secular de “trabalhar para viver” em “soprar a vida de Deus no trabalho”, a igreja precisa se tornar mais do que simplesmente adoração e ensino.
6. O Que Precisamos Fazer Agora
Não precisamos elaborar planos e estratégias. Só precisamos começar. Mas, para começar, precisamos desenvolver planos simples que funcionem, e construir sobre a experiência que já temos. Já temos um bom número de bons livros de motivação, estudos e exemplos, e suficiente culpa por não fazer o que é preciso. Isso está bom para começar. O que nos falta é massa crítica para construir e criar o momento para fazer o processo sustentável.
Construir uma ponte entre o secular e o sagrado começa com uma ponte entre a igreja e o local de trabalho. Importantes envolvimentos da laicidade no desenvolvimento de estratégias, como o que está acontecendo no Congresso Cape Town 2010, é um bom começo. Apesar de os pastores estarem ombro a ombro com a laicidade no contexto da igreja, as conversas enfocam os negócios da igreja e não a missão nos locais de trabalho. Muitos pastores não têm a experiência nem o conhecimento para se envolver em uma discussão prática de missão voltada para ambientes profisisonais. Educar a laicidade no sentido de trazer questões do local de trabalho para a agenda de missões da igreja é importante, mas isso deve ser feito em paralelo, para ajudar o clero ver as possibilidades de missões nestes lugares. Tudo o que fazemos é um dom de Deus, quer seja pregar, ensinar, projetar, cozinhar, limpar, criar uma planilha ou operar uma máquina. E tudo o que fazermos deve refletir excelência, uma oferta digna e aceitável a Deus.
Todo treinamento e todas as melhores ferramentas vão acumular pó nas prateleiras se não houver uma renovação da paixão, que vem somente através da oração e do mover do Espírito de Deus. O púlpito é um instrumento poderoso, mas apenas se for relevante. Regurgitar velhos clichês sem entender a dinâmica do trabalho apenas aumen
ta a divisão entre o secular e o sagrado.
Esta é a hora de colocar de lado velhos paradigmas e começar a transformar o local de trabalho em um terreno santo, onde Deus seja convidado a mover-Se através de nossas vidas. Começar é importante, mas sem sustentabilidade como parte integral de um projeto, a missão no local de trabalho se tornará um modismo e não uma realidade. Precisamos pedir a Deus que levante campeões que liderem o processo. Precisamos destes campeões para trabalhar com crentes de todas as vocações e chamados, para construir uma comunidade prática, para promover a excelência e para manter o momento vivo.
Temos ferramentas como a Internet e o Skype que podem facilitar a troca de conhecimento através de comunidades virtuais. Tais ferramentas podem causar um impacto real. Através da tecnologia podemos compartilhar e vivenciar o mover de Deus em tempo real. Precisamos colocar em funcionamento rodas que nos levarão a lugares que não imaginávamos possíveis.
7. Como é um ambiente de trabalho sagrado? – Modelo de José
Discutir conceitos sobre “o que é” e “o que deveria ser” cria conscientização e motiva as pessoas a agirem. Mas, se não soubermos para onde estamos indo, estaremos crescendo no escuro. Todos nós esperamos que nossos esforços produzam o início da jornada de fé nas pessoas, e que elas passem a ter um relacionamento cada vez mais firme com Deus. Mas sair de onde estamos e ir para onde queremos estar não acontece da noite para o dia. Não temos uma fórmula mágica nem manuais de instrução que garantam resultados perfeitos, mas temos uma lista de exemplos do que é possível. Deus me abençoou com um local de trabalho sagrado onde sirvo-O como consultor profissional de engenharia. Chamo este exemplo de “Modelo de José” em homenagem ao homem que transformou cada um dos seus ambientes de trabalho de condições adversas.
O caminho para a fé é uma jornada cujo ponto da virada é alcançado quando a busca dá lugar ao comprometimento e à transformação constante, através de um andar diário com Deus, em um ambiente que foi reclamado por Ele. Entretanto, no processo de plantar a semente, existem muitas variáveis que fogem do nosso controle, impedindo o crescimento e a maturidade. Depois de anos tentando convidar colegas de trabalho para se juntarem à jornada de fé, percebi que sem um ambiente propício, palavras e exemplos pessoais não eram suficientes. Para superar alguns impedimentos e alcançar a fase de compromisso, comecei o processo de discipulado a partir do momento em que a pessoa entrava na minha esfera de influência. Embora eu tenha o privilégio de ser diretor da empresa na qual trabalho, também tenho a responsabilidade de tentar usar tudo o que estiver em meu alcance para criar um ambiente altamente propício à excelência do produto que fornecemos, e de ajuda, para que as pessoas alcancem seu mais alto potencial.
Lidero um grupo de engenheiros profissionais altamente qualificados com projetos ativos em mais de 20 países. Nosso principal produto são relatórios de consultoria de alto nível para governos, agências de fundos internacionais e executivos de empresas de eletricidade. Os valores que conduzem nosso ambiente de trabalho incluem prestação de contas, responsabilidade, excelência, trabalho em equipe, discussões em um ambiente de aprendizado, riscos, perdão, apoio e celebração. Embora todos estes itens sejam muito desejáveis do ponto de vista profissional, eles também podem ser importantes para ajudar pessoas a embarcar em uma saudável jornada de fé, antes de assumirem qualquer compromisso com o Senhor. Estes itens se tornaram diretrizes para se obter execelência profissional, e também parte integrante do processo de fazer bons discípulos.
Prestação de contas lembra as pessoas que devem responder a uma autoridade superior em qualquer área da vida. A responsabilidade reforça o princípio de trabalhar em meio à dificuldade de cumprir obrigações e compromissos. O valor da excelência motiva as pessoas a fazerem melhor do que faziam antes e melhor do que outros estão acostumados a fazer. Um ambiente de aprendizado estimula a discussão e encoraja a busca do conhecimento atual e a descoberta de coisas novas sobre a vida. Encorajar a equipe a correr riscos ajuda a sair da zona de conforto para um novo território, enquanto o perdão é oferecido aos que cometem erros ou àqueles cujas iniciativas não foram bem sucedidos como seu otimismo inicial indicava. O apoio ajuda as pessoas a prosseguirem com confiança para o nível seguinte de entendimento e conhecimento, com celebração pelos sucessos. Não existe divisão entre secular e sagrado no desenvolvimento destes valores.
Este é um ambiente santo, uma vez que todos os valores acima são fundamentais para andar em fé. Tal ambiente não é apenas para excelência profissional, mas também para colegas de trabalho serem discipulados muito antes de assumirem um compromisso de fé. Cada um dos valores destaca um aspecto da fé e é praticado no local de trabalho diariamente, dando aos envolvidos no trabalho a experiência de andar em fé, o que é o objetivo das Boas Novas. Portanto, quando eles conhecem Jesus atravessando a ponte para a vida de fé, estão num estilo de vida que já lhes é familiar, porque já tinham passado por um curso intensivo de discipulado antes da sua conversão, que agora os ajuda a crescer rapidamente no seu relacionamento com Deus.
Este é o ambiente sagrado no qual eu vivo no meu local de trabalho. Para aqueles que não estão em posições de gerência, o terreno santo pode ser limitado para sua área compartilhada de trabalho, sua mesa ou sua bancada. Para alguns, o local santo de trabalho é o estudo bíblico semanal na hora do almoço. Para outros, podem ser os intervalos para o cafezinho ou para o almoço com conversas, não monólogos, sobre coisas da vida. Por último, o que transforma o secular em sagrado é a presença de Deus . E quando Deus está presente, mudanças acontecem. Somos chamados para ser agentes de mudança. Se José pôde fazer isso como escravo e prisioneiro, não existe razão por que nós não possamos transformar em um terreno santo o que está dentro da nossa esfera de influência.
8. Mapa para o Futuro
O futuro está repleto de possibilidades para alcançar bilhões de pessoas ativas, que ganham a vida no local de trabalho. Para onde esta estrada nos levará, depende da construção de pontes sobre a divisão entre o secular e sagrado. O Congresso Cape Town 2010 trará a laicidade para o contato direto com líderes da igreja. Podemos traçar um programa, mas o que precisamos mesmo é ampliar nossa visão com liderança eficaz, e isso virá somente através da oração.
Todos os movimentos precisam de liderança. A liderança no local de trabalho é necessária tanto quanto a liderança em agências missionárias e nas igrejas. Muitos profissionais são líderes, mas outros, não. Os poucos que falam em público ou escrevem, recebem atenção, principalmente se forem CEO’s ou algum dignatário. Precisamos energizar, treinar e equipar homens e mulheres leigas para levarem o Evangelho a todos os cantos onde trabalham. Como treinamos líderes para serem catalisadores no contexto em que vivem e para mobilizarem outras pessoas? Muitos profissionais crentes querem realmente alcançar pessoas e causar impacto onde trabalham. Mas, como em outros contextos, eles precisam de liderança. Quase todos pensam em liderança no contexto secular e no contexto de igreja organizada. As pessoas leem livros sobre gerenciamento e liderança, sobre como liderar melhor no trabalho ou no “ministério”, mas, o que é preciso para liderar no local de trabalho e causar impacto para o Evangelho? Certamente é mais do que organizar um estudo bíblico ao meio dia ou uma palestra especial. Como é este líder na linha de montagem ou à frente de uma corporação? O que ele precisa para desenvolver a capacidade de liderança de fé no local que exerce sua profissão? Será que basta gerenciar bem o seu trabalho?
Que no Congresso Cape Town 2010, Deus abra nossos olhos e derrube barreiras que criamos, para que todos possamos preparar o local de trabalho para uma incrível jornada de fé.

This is a very appropriate move that my prayer is the church takes. We work beside that harvest forty hours per week but the workers are few. For the majority the workers have not been adequately trained or received the support of the local church. Further we have to have a program that may not heal every wound but that is a great bandage. My prayer is that from Cape Town forward we as the church will choose to support the laity who are working beside the harvest.

We often pray publically at the front of the church for people going on missions trips for a fews. How would our view of the workplace change if we had public prayer for those who are going into the workplace every weekday of the year?

What’s been burning in my heart is the fact that we as Children of God have access to God’s Wisdom and Creativity. We see in 1 Kings 10 how Wisdom and Creativity were related :4-5. :
“And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built,
the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers, and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the LORD, there was no more spirit in her.”
Solving complex problems, creative ideas, inventions.. we, the Church should be the forerunners.
It is crucial in this hour that the Children of God know with confidence that they hear the voice of God. John 10:27. "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
The question is... are you a sheep? :) When we are faced with a complex problem or need creative ideas, in stead of first trying to figure it out in our own strength, we need to in that moment ask the Holy Spirit what He thinks first. I love this scripture in Acts 15:28
“For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:”
They discussed the situation with the Holy Spirit. That is available to all of us. 2 Corinthians 13:14: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.”
It is about living by example and be sensitive when the Lord speaks to us. Over the weekend we were in SAMs Club and as we were leaving I felt the Lord saying to me to tell the cashier that she is so precious to Him. I was about to leave but so glad I went back to her. I whispered in her ear and her face lit up, it so touched her heart!
I was very involved in the fashion industry in South Africa before attending a School of Ministry in Canada in 2000 (We moved to the USA in 2004). There were many times where I was lonely ’cause people saw that I was different. I did not walk around proclaiming that I was a Christian but they could see through my lifestyle that I was... some of them started to come to me and talk to me when they needed someone to talk to and later I had the priviledge of seeing some give their lives to the Lord.
One thing I’ve learned through that was that people in the world may reject you at first but they are watching you. When you compromise you loose their respect, but when you walk your Christian walk with love and boldness you gain respect.
We are the answer through the power of the Holy Spirit. The deepest need a human being has is to be loved. By knowing who we are in Him, we can love people through their "stuff".
We need God’s Wisdom in the market place. Here are some old Testament example where God filled specific people with the Holy Spirit, now we all can be filled, we all have access to the One who knows everything!!
Exd 31:3 "And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,"
Exd 35:31 "and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship,
1 Kings 4:34 And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.
This is the Global Church’s greatest hour... may all nations, from all the kings of the earth come to hear and see what the Lord is saying through His Children.
We are the answer because we have access!!

Thank you for a great paper to get this conversation going. The feedback that has already been submitted is very thoughtful. I hope what I add here will be helpful as well.
In addition to the points made here, I believe that in order to be an effective witness for Christ in the marketplace, we must also devote ourselves to being examples of excellence in the workplace. We must not only embody the fruit of the spirit and be exemplary Christians, but we must likewise be exemplary professionals in our fields. I would even argue that we must first be exemplary workers before we can be exemplary Christians. Nothing makes a poorer witness than someone who is unprofessional and yet zealous for Christ. We must be leaders, demonstrating gospel values (humility, honesty, integrity) while also demonstrating the highest professionalism. We must aim to be above reproach in all things. When we have earned professional respect, our gospel witness will have a much more receptive audience among our co-workers.
We also must exercise appropriate sensitivity in theological engagement and “witnessing.” For example, going out to coffee or lunch with a co-worker might be a better place for spiritual conversations than standing around the photocopier (perhaps not, but discernment is required!) We cannot interrupt peoples’ work with our agenda to witness, as important as sharing the gospel is, unless it is clearly an open door from God.
As has already been stated, we cannot underestimate the importance of prayer in the workplace. When I worked for the CEO of a global corporation in New York City, I would sometimes go in to the office early and silently prayer-walk the office corridors. I would pray for supernatural conversations and pray for co-workers. I did this discreetly and without drawing attention to myself. I was always blessed by how God would open doors for conversations that were divine. I was able to make some great relationships and share the gospel in natural ways.
We have to be careful not to come across like we have an agenda – even if that “agenda” is for others to have life to the fullest through Jesus Christ! Rather, we need to be authentic, genuine professionals and friends to our co-workers, ready to respond when the Holy Spirit opens doors for engagement.

I particularly appreciate your comment. I have seen situations where people left what should have been done in the name of Christ. I wonder how Christ can be reflected in such attitude. I have visited some countries where it is unlawful to talk about christ to a colleague at work. One professionalism will certainly speak volume about Christ.

Reading this article has greatly encouraged me. The author has put into words much of what I have a passion for that I haven’t been able to document. Because there doesn’t "seem to me" to be much emphasis in the local church for being a 24/7 witness in one’s life and work, one tends to feel like he’s carrying out a personal agenda and not being an obedient Kingdom worker. This is surely just a lie of Satan. I am greatly encouraged because I now know that there are many of you out there that feel exactly the same as I do and for this I thank you. There is hope!

I think the use of Paul, Joseph and Daniel to the theme of being an influence for Christ in the work place was excellent. I had never before connected the dots before in those examples linking the two. It takes away the excuses of those who would separate their faith from the workplace. It gives us a biblical model to into the equipping of the church in this paradigm. Thank you!

Yes ernesto we do need to do the work of evangelism at the work place but sometimes we miss out because we can’t see what it can be, we don’t always have to have a bible in our hand or even use the name of Jesus in the beginning, but rather let them see Jesus in us and his name will come up.

I also share you statement that the fields are riped in the workplace. there are so many opportunities for Christians to witness that if all of us will take advantage of the situation, there will not be enough of us to share the gospel in the places that we work. Inspite of the fact that in the majority of the workplaces talking about Jesus is prohibited, there are still plenty who allow believers to witness to their coworkers at a certaing time and place. therefore, let us not lose the wonderful opportunities that we have to proclaim the powerful truth that there is hope and salvation in Jesus Chirst our Lord and Savior.

You bring up a good point that sometimes Christians are not allowed to share their faith in Christ at work; therefore, Christians must express their faith in their words and deeds. If Christians would exercise the Fruits of the Spirit, their faith should become obvious to those around them. Since most of the world is not patient, being a patient with people will definately make you stick out as a Christian.

That is what I would like to communicate to our churches, if we let the Holy Spirit move then we can be used in such a special way. The Holy Spirit allows us to do things we couldn’t even imagine doing in our own power. The Holy Spirit is the key to effective work place ministry.

This advanced paper was very interesting because this topic is definately a severe problem in America. Christians feel unequipped and unable to share their faith with their co-workers, so they miss God given opportunities to make disciples. Every workplace Christian knows that there unchurched people in their office, so the first step is to simple take an interest in these people. If Christians begin to care and take an interest in their coworkers, questions of spirituality will arise. Once people know that you are true follower of Christ, they begin to see you as a moral counselor. They are likely to approach you and share information about themselves because they know you care about them. For Christians that are scared or feel inadequate, simply caring can be a great first step.

It is very important to bring your faith to work. We are the salt and light of the world and just because you are at work that doesn’t change. You lead by example. So while on the job, you are to behave a certain way because you are a child of God and you want people to be able to see that. This way when you are given the opportunity to minister to them, they will recieve it because they see your acts.

Often it is those we are closest to, and really care about the most that we find the hardest to witness to. I wonder if it is because they see the "true" us each and every day. We need to teach our people to make sure they "live-out" the gospel in all they do. If we are different, people will notice and begin to seek what we have. Witnessing will be easier when Jesus is first in all aspects of our lives. Let us be like Joseph - depending on God no matter the situation we find ourselves in.

Thank you for this article on Work-place ministry. Oftentimes we go to work wondering how people will react if we talk about our faith. So in turn we keep our faith to ourselves. I appreciate the you lifting up that the harvest is ripe, but where are the harvesters. Carrying our faith to work and sharing it with our co-workers are great opportunities that reaches the masses and allows the gospel of Jesus Christ to have transforming effects in the lives of those who may not know him. We are the salt of the earth, and it behoves us to go, share and make disciples, even at the workplace. Our witness is only as effective as we make it. This article encourages me to encourage others to reach out to others who are hurting, and despondent, by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Workplace ministry is a good way to get unchurched people into our congregation. I did not even consider that some people that are not bold enough to share Christ with their co-workers, can simply invite them to church to hear the Gospel.

For the past thirty years I have had the privilege of working in both the secular and Christian work force. First as a salesman and then as a manager for a large retailer in the South East. Now that I am a pastor I can reflect on my years in retail to determine what worked when it came to me sharing my faith. First, I do believe that the work place is a great place to share our faith, but I also believe that it is a privilege that is earned. Like the old cliche that says "people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care" is true or at least it is in my experience. Building a relationship with your co-workers allows you to share your faith when the appropriate time comes. The challenge that is ahead of us is building the relationship, because I fear that we are quickly becoming a generation that does not know how to talk with one anothern face to face. Today it is easier to send an IM, text message, e-mail, or Facebook comment to someone setting five feet away than it is to talk to them face to face. Nevertheless, I believe God has placed Christians in the work force to be a light to a darken world. We should not be afraid or ashamed of the Gospel as Romans 1:16 reminds us "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile." I agree with Melanie that most Christians are too busy with "church work" that they miss out on making disciples. I think the best solution to this problem is to be knowledgeable of this issue and find a way to plug into society. Volunteering at social service organizations, like children shelters, or homeless shelters are an excellent way to get involved in the outside world. It is vital for ministers to find outlets so they can actually meet lost people.

We Christians should take the time to interact with those who have been marginalized by society insead of ignoring them. If we are true followers of Christ, we have to live by personal example and go beyond our comfort zones in our churches. Jesus on the other hand, did not reject anybody during his ministry. On the contrary, He showed them His love and compassion by spending time with them in spite of the criticism from the religious leaders of His time. And, of course, He was not popular for the fact that he loved and cared for those whom have been abandoned.

The lesson we can glean from Jesus example is that if we act in accordance to the Scriptures there will always be people to minister with the Gospel. As long as we let the Holy Spirit dictate our actions then God will be faithful in providing individuals to minister.

I found this paper and the discussions helpful, this is something I’ve thought a lot about lately, especially with Lausanne coming up...do we really need to be in "full time ministry" to be in full time ministry?
I was in a lecture last week and we were discussing the problem of witnessing to friends and sharing faith with work colleagues and them commenting that we as christians are too busy doing church stuff to really enjoy life! How are our church commitments and pressure in many churches to "get involved" often in numerous committees and ministries, helping or hindering our proclamation of the gospel? If we spend all our day doing Christian meetings, how do we firstly build meaningful relationships with those outside the church and secondly, how do we stop ourselves from getting bogged down in church politics?
I think we need to rethink our lifestyles in order to connect with our workmates better!

Workplace ministry is definately one of the most important ministries in America. The majority of our church members are involved in a secular workplace atmosphere; therefore, it is vital that they take advantage of these opportunites. As church workers, we should inspire these individuals to utilize their opportunities. There are several things people can do before they even open their mouth to spread faith in Christ. They must perform at a highest standard than the average worker because Christ calls us to work as if we are working for God and not for men. Workers can also display a Christian attitude and kindness towards individuals, this alone should make them stand out from the crowd. I believe it is our job, as ministers, to inspire our people who have access to the people we can’t reach.

workplace ministry is a huge area to witness to those who do not feel the desire to attend a church service on a given Sunday morning. I have also learned from other experts on evangelism that the average christian worker is far more effective than the "professional ministers." I am not saying that ministers are not a blessing because I stronlgy believe that they are the experts in doing the work of the Lord in any context or setting. On the other hand, the average Christian has the ability to be a better witness to his coworkers for the fact that he/she spend the majority of the time with them. Therefore, they have the tremendous opportunity of to be a blessing to their fellow workers right at the exact moment of a crisis.

In regards to the ministry in the workplace, one should ask the question, if Christians don’t step up to the plate and speak in the name of our Lord, who will? yes, there are many other religions whose members claim to have "the truth" and they wind up distorting it. But, the turth of the matter is that the majority of the times, they will convince others due to the fact that they are in desperate need of spiritual help in such a way that they are willing to listen to anyone who shares his/her faith. My personal opinion is that we as Christians have the truth in Christ who said and in fact it was true, "I am the the way, the life and the truth, no one comes to the Father but, through me."

A colleage, Christian Overman, and I are partnering in presenting a workshop for church leaders: MAKING WORKPLACE-READY DISCIPLES (comparing the need here to the need for battle-ready soldiers in any war zone). We offer this strategy statement:
To equip workplace-ready disciples, we will mesh Sunday with weekdays by: (1) making scattered-church concerns a major part of gathered-church services, and (2) encouraging believers to gather even when scattered.
Among the tactics we recommend to carry out this strategy are: Sermons on the workplace; Reports from the front lines (workplace testimonies in public services); Public prayer for those in the work world; Video clips; Commissioning; Home groups that include workplace prayer ane encouragement; Pastoral visits to the workplace; Workplace groups (such as one just started in Microsoft); and Seminars.

I have a felow church member who has had to result to only being able to read her Bible or pray in the school which she is employed because of church-state regulations.
