Various factors are listed as contributing to the world-wide economic crisis. What the headlines fail to report is THE root cause behind present financial difficulties. That badge of dishonor actually belongs to the “heart of a person,” an invisible, natural, and predictable orientation that everyone has towards self-interest. It took an immense amount of self-motivated planning and self-oriented decision-making by a large number of self-centered people to produce world-wide financial difficulties.

The root cause of current economic troubles is the same root
of evil and that is the love of money.
There are a lot of resources that would replenish the world but people
don’t want to live peacefully in this world and share. Although it seems like
this world is heading down a slippery slope, but we as believers have to keep
our eye on the source, the only true source which is God. I like our President,
but my faith and trust will always be in my Heavenly Father, for He holds the
future!

I agree with you.  In a world with so many resources, why are so many people experiencing lack?  Your interpretation of scripture is spot on: The love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself.

The root cause of our current economic trouble is due to greedy people.  The rich want to get richer and they don’t care how they go about it.  People are suffering financially in this country at alarming rates and most of our rich people want to gain all they can.  And politicians seem too care less about the financial woes in our country as well.  President Obama inherited a terrible financial situation when he came into office.  The political leaders from both sides of the aisle don’t seem to want to give him a helping hand.  All they want to do is block his plans and watch the country go down the tube!

@ Robert_Setzer:

Unfortunately a lot of people don’t understand the nature of politics or the nature of politicians. It’s easy to blame one person or one party but the reality is that none of these problem occured overnight and won’t be solved overnight nor by one person or one party. If personal revenue grew in a bad economy like blame does we wouldn’t have a economic problem to speak of. What we have to do is look for opportunities for success at this point...wherever we can find them.

I completely agree with everything that has been said. Greed and self-interest is the root cause of all the economic turmoil. My question is “how do we fix it?” This is a topic that we have discussed in my Christian Ethics class here at seminary in the States. Unfortunately Christians have been a part of the problem. We are a part of the system. If we begin following the scriptures (which we should, don’t get me wrong) are we ready to accept the repercussions?  If we “deny ourselves” and quit contributing to the economic market (i.e. quit buying the things that we want but do not necessarily need),  demand will go down, products will quit being made, the need for those who make the products will be diminished and, therefore, jobs will be lost. It will get worst. Are we willing to be the cause for this? Will it mean that we are the cause for harm when we are the ones who are supposed to be doing good?

You raise some very good points. We can only work where we are and help how we can. One person one need at a time. I know it seems tedious but that’s where we have to start.

Many country suffer at the hands of the leaders, because of greed.  In my opinion, these are selfish people who only think of themselves.  No, we cannot save the world, but don’t saving one life matter?

yes Sashe we must reach one person at a time. it not just the goverment or corporations. the fault belongs to Christians who did not stand up and be heared. We became complacent and allowed them to become self centered. The me generation as the commercial on tv it’s my money and I want it now.

@ dunybec:

I think the biggest thing that bothers me about all of this is that a lot of people, including evangelicals, think that the government is still the answer to all of the problems.  If we just elect the right person, things would be better.  If we just make enough of a noise against "insert injustice here", then things will change.  I wish that evangelicals would separate themselves from government to some extent, not degrading it or opposing it as Jesus and Paul both said to respect local government, but by not relying on politics to solve problems.  It is my belief that the church is to be the first to come to the rescue of injustice or difficult situations.  For instance, the church had an intense presence on the gulf after hurricane Katrina.  Here where I live evangelicals have come to the physcal and emotional support of a family on a search for their missing boy who was swept by a rushing river.  These are just two examples of what I am talking about.  The government does not have to be our advocate of work, we are called to act, not to elect others to act.

@ sashe:

Sashe,

I agree that greed is the result of selfishness. One’s selfishness not only affects you but others. We have to deny the urge toward selfishness. Luke 9:23, "If anyone would come with me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." To be a servant is the cure for selfishness.

I agree that the fault belongs to Christians. If we would try to help one somebody and allow this mindset to be apart of who we are as Christians then the world would be a better place.

If we each as Christians take a stand for who we are and whose we are, we maybe able to make a different.  we will always have difficulties, however, if we go back and read the Acts of Luke, we will see how things was done and how it can be again.

Great response, Luke-Acts tells us that the church shared all they had. God’s word is what makes the difference. If only we would be more obedient and follow the instructions.

Adam Smith had a point of it not being benevolence from the "butcher, brewer and baker" that moved society foward, but from their own self interest.  Unfornately, it did moved us down the road, and right to this crsis.  That self-interest that Smith talked of was a self interest in caring and providing for your needs, unfortunately somewhere on that road, someone realized that not only could they have their family cared for, but they could also have their wallets bursting and envy of their fellow man, and here we sit, and  a heart change is the only cure.
