Dying to self is a major obstacle blocking any believer from growing in Christ. That same obstacle blocks a believer from being a Christ-like servant, which is a necessity for authentic biblical leadership. This brief article highlights the necessity for leaders to deal with personal spiritual progress as a higher priority than leadership assignments.

I so agree with this. The flesh is one of our biggest obstacles. We must kill our flesh in order for our spirit to live. Which ever one we feed that’s the one who gets stronger. And we know in our flesh dwelleth no good thing. But still as humans we want to self satisfy everything it yearns for as if it was a right to have and practice. But as believers we give up that right of our flesh for Jesus and allow our spirit to rule as He is Lord and Savior of the life we have chosen for Him.

@ JourneywithCHRISTie:
It has been wonderful to watch you grow so much in your time at gwu. that being said the best way to die to ones self is to begin living for others first this is especially hard to do when your own needs are not being met. thier is goodness within all who have been redeemed and even those who have not been remember that we bear the image of God.

When we evaluate our journey often times "self" is the greatest obstacle that we must deal with. To crucify flesh daily is a task that cannot be done alone. So many of the confrontations that we encounter in life is a battle between two opposing wills. Most of us if we don’t get our way it creates major problems. The truth is that the old man don’t want to die.

What happened to trusting God? If we continually (day by day) pray that we must die to self and rise up with Christ, why do we fall? Is it because the things of the world still seem attractive or is it a Faith based issue?

@ OwenPrince:
Thank you for you input. Trusting God is the basis for every aspect of our Christ-like development. The allure of the world (1 John 2:16) is the magnet for our fleshly desires that is in opposition to our trusting God. As we grow in our appreciation for Christ and His work on our behalf and respond accordingly by being obedient to God’s Word, we will become more Christ-like and, in the process, die to self. I look forward to spending all of eternity in Heaven with you in His presence. In the meantime, may we be faithful in bringing glory to God.

@ OwenPrince:
Pray - trust - resist: all necessary for dying to self. But it is a slow death! Sanctification develops. I believe it grows with immersion in the Word written (after submission to the Word Incarnate, of course). We should begin modelling with our own family. How about Mission to the Family as a Congress topic? Start at birth with our children, keeping a time of regular Family Prayers and Bible instruction for the family around God’s Word. (For more on this see my article Restoring the Bible’s Missional Role in the Family attached.)

Persevere is another aspect! Sorry about the attachment not working. If anyone want to read my article, try typing "Bible Families" in the search box of "Scripture In Mission". That usually works!
