Good article. My comments may not be fruitful since the author did not post it. It encourages Africa and its leaders to sit up and this is good. However, it also acknowledges that some part of Africa may be in the drag net (I prefer pit). The writer also acknowledges, using the wound example, his hestitation about how the wound will be cleaned (sed) and restultant consequence of not cleaning it in time. He agrees that all aid is not bad and even goes ahead to show the problems with aid system - the fraud.
It seems to me that refusing aid to the man in the pit may be coming from either pride or over-reaction. This man is temporarily incapacitated by the fact of his being in the pit (net). Any attempt to get him out of the net or pit is AID. This man NEEDS AID. However, the question of what type of aid arises and that could be solved. The fraud could also be delt with - who doesn’t know the scrap value of equipment or that they are sold? The problem I see is with including scrap value in the package. The issue of selling their products could also be handled. Let me give an example. A medical team was dispensing drugs assembled from donations. It was noticed that some of them had very short shelf-life (that was why they were given out in the first place). We did not stop the medical team because some of the drugs have short shelf-life or criticize the donors, instead we explained the condition to those who came for treatment. The doctors prescribe the drugs needed, those who can afford buy their drugs, those who can’t afford recieve part of the prescription and are encouraged to buy the part that would complete their treatment. We then thanked the donors and appealed to them to incude some new products and some that have longer shelf-life in their donations. Yes, people are almost always willing to start giving with what they do not need (even in the church) and it is pride to refuse it when you need it, especially if you do that because the donor has something better! Yes, Africa is getting up. Yes, she can do more. But no, refusing aid will be retrogresive. Yes, some aid is bait. So, open your eyes. Finally, inferiority and superiority has little to do with who gives what.
