As followers of Jesus, we are called to be “in” the world, but “not of” the world, which means that every generation must discern and engage the world of its day. Beyond any question, the single, strongest challenge posed by the world of our day is the impact of “globalization.” Driven at its core by the recent revolution in information technology, globalization is the process by which human interconnectedness has been expanded to a truly global level, leading to an unprecedented acceleration, compression, and intensification of life today. Globalization is having incalculable effects on our sense of place and time, identity, family, community, work, religion, cities, evil, governance, politics, the earth, and even the prospects for the human race. This conversation will seek to define and describe globalization, and go beyond the general challenges to explore the most profound issues that touch on discipleship and mission in the global era. We also want to hear from voices around the world describing the challenge of globalization from their own perspective.
