Cape Town 2010 has been built upon the book of Ephesians. Focusing on just one book of the Bible enables us to go deeply into the Scripture and creates a common space for us “to hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Rev. 2:7). We desire to move into the 21st century in alignment with God’s Spirit and one another. Studying and meditating on God’s Word together enables us to listen to his voice, discern his will, and receive his empowerment.
We chose the book of Ephesians because of the scope of its vision and its clear articulation of the role of the Church in God’s redemptive purposes. The Apostle Paul’s exhortation for the Church to grow in unity and maturity is as needful now as it was in the first century. Ephesians sounds a clarion call to believers to see the global Church rightly within the context of Christ’s sovereign rule and amidst the battle with powers of darkness that oppose that rule. It also offers incredibly practical advice about how to live out the new life we have been given with one another in God’s family.
Often the most fruitful (and interesting) Bible studies include people with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. All of us benefit from study partners who will ask different questions than we might normally ask and who apply the same passages into very different situations. May our communal study of Ephesians enable us to hear God’s voice clearly and boldly obey it.
