Everywhere you look, evidence of environmental change and decay stares you in the face. Mountain slopes and watershed lands have changed. Deserts are expanding. Droughts and unusual weather systems are contributing to a global food and energy crisis. Agricultural practices now require adaptations to new climate regimes. The oceans, on which so much of life depends, are changing. Small island states in the Pacific and the Caribbean are most vulnerable. Populations are at risk from the rise in vector-borne infectious diseases affecting global public health. Informal and unregulated human settlements on fragile environments, as well as big commercial and industrial developments on tenuous ecosystems, threaten national sustainable development. Global climate change is impacting environments everywhere. Can the need for economic development be balanced with environmental care? What is the Christian response?
The conversation on Environment focuses on the effects of Christian evangelism and the role of the Church on the global environmental crisis. The aim of this conversation is to understand the complex issues involved in the global environmental crisis, appreciate the need for effective biblical and theological response, focus on the role of the Church, provide opportunity for Christians to make commitments to the biblical care of creation and make connections for global partnerships and networking.
