As he so often does, God threw a major wrench in our plans as he began to introduce us to our neighbors of many nations. Convinced that we had moved into the very heart of the white, Evangelical Midwest (just ten minutes from Wheaton College), we were shocked to find that some 80-90% of the families…

If those who wear tika (तिलक) keep the requirements of God’s Word, will they not be regarded as Bhaktas of Lord Sri Jesus?

The one who wears tika (तिलक) and yet obeys God’s Word will condemn you who, even though you stopped wearing tika (तिलक), are a lawbreaker.

A man is not a Bhakta of Lord Sri Jesus if he is only one outwardly, nor is devotion and…

I went to the park to watch seasonal birds, and I ended up speaking to and interviewing two seasonal migrant workers…

Written translation often takes years. What if we could have Bible stories in video form in weeks? What if you had a tool to engage people in the Bible translation process while broadening access to the Scriptures? A new media strategy, introduced in a cluster project in Papua New Guinea with initial success, provides hands-on involvement engaging learners cognitively, emotionally, and physically, and generating ownership of the final product. The process, which involves recording Bible stories, can be used at any stage of a translation project. Digital images help convey the story culturally, historically, and geographically…

As often in these discussions, economic inequality was mentioned as one of the priority areas that have to be addressed. The presenter said that for this to happen, we need a global culture change. I therefore asked him how such a culture change could happen. He said that he does not know although such change is possible.

The UK was the most corrupt nation in the 18th Century but the values in the country changed so…

This usage brings with it many questions, which we shall address, later in this document. This paper will investigate the pros and cons of using Exodus in this way. Additionally, it will seek to contextualize the liberation theology for the Caribbean, as against conservative theology. Finally, using epistemology, methodology, and social ontology of liberation, it will posit that the Exodus event and experience in the Hebrew scripture is an effective paradigm of liberation.

If so, it should deal with every aspect of life and relationships, including the political realm and, specifically, the people involved in politics. Three indisputable characteristics of “politics as usual” plague every government in the world and have created havoc throughout history. Scripture minces no words in dealing with these self-centered aspects of human nature.

The diversity of philanthropic initiatives in Europe are explained through a few examples of European foundations. This dynamic philanthropy continues to have a major impact on Europe’s evolving social, political and economic life. Philanthropic dynamism was born within Europe’s different religious contexts and has moved forward in tandem with its secularization. As church and state separated – in most countries – philanthropy has found its place in modern societies in different ways. Foundations have played an important role in the development and strengthening of…

The Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization published the Lausanne Standards (http://www.lausannestandards.org/) as a set of values and principles to guide donors and recipients through the minefield of international funding. In this story set, Ruedi and Jenny Giezendanner illustrate these values and principles with six biblical narratives.
These stories reflect the primary values underlying the Lausanne Standards includin integrity, trust, respect, giftedness, interdependence, stewardship and accountability, vision, communication, cultural sensitivity, and flexibility.

Through this initiative Christians are motivated to become involved in the Great Commission, the joy and discipline of generous giving is taught as part of discipleship and leaders are trained in culturally adapted fundraising efforts that are Biblically based. A great booklet that will hopefully encourage other ministries to develop similar initiatives.

Joshua understood succession and, and knowing that, after all the battles that lay ahead, people would settle down into much more…

A personal reflection by a young Brazilian evangelical

In March 2013, Jorge Mario Bergolio was elected Pope Francis, the first pope of the Jesuit order and also the first from Latin America. The leader of 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide, he has already announced that he wants to engage in dialogue with Evangelicals, Orthodox, and Anglicans.

Brazil is one the places that is expected to receive much of the Pope’s…

People in The Lausanne Movement are paying more and more attention to the workplace. Workplace means any setting where people work -- such as business, government, education, medicine, media, raising children at home, and NGOs -- outside the church and church-related organizations. The Cape Town Commitment brought the workplace to prominence in section IIA 3: ‘Truth and the Workplace’. Why all the attention? There are two chief reasons: access…

Introduction

I moved to New York City in June 1984. The previous summer was spent in Bihar, India just below Nepal. Bihar at that time was the size of Nebraska with 100 million people. The ratio of Hindus and Muslims to Christians was 100,000 to 1.

In an interesting sort of way, Bihar prepared me for New York City. My hometown in rural South Dakota had 600 people. Within…

Christians around the world today find themselves in contexts that are very different from those of 40 years ago:Nearly 20% of the global population was either agnostic or atheist in 1970.The decades leading up to the 21st century witnessed dramatic social and political upheavals, in addition to horrific environmental catastrophes.By the year 2010, only 11.8% of the world was non-religious, and amazing technological innovations have changed the way people…

There has never been a time in human history when there are so many opportunities to share the Good News, so many young people recently born who need to hear, and so many questions that people are asking about themselves, their future and about their wider world. Here are 7 dimensions that will shape these exciting FUTURES:

F – Fast

U – Urban

T – Tribal

U – Universal…

In a context where churches working with the poor are often accused of using financial help as an incentive to convert people and especially children, influencing children through sponsorships can be dangerous to local ministries. Ramachandra concludes that many Christians in poor nations have learned the skills necessary to court donors from rich nations. They know what is the “flavour…

He argues that there is ’something deeply Christian about child sponsorship as a mode of delivering aid and development. It is about genuine relationship, about love; it as close as I can get to face to face care.’ Giving and generosity is therefore relational.

If you answer “yes," then you are on solid biblical ground. It is sad that many believers trust the Bible to be authoritative for salvation and eternal life but do not believe it is sufficient to face and deal with all aspects of life and relationships. If a person does not believe in the complete sufficiency of Scripture to face all challenges and situations in life, then there is…

When people study deeper, they would sometimes fall into the sin of “Mr. Know-everything,” but soon afterward, God would indeed show that they are “Mr. Know-nothing,” only to balance us in the end that we are “Mr. Know-something.” We must be satisfied with knowing “something,” I suppose. The road to this kind of humility is not less studying, but indeed, a lot more! How I long to see people and students learn to think critically. To think critical and be a learned person should not be…

After reading the work of a few more theologians, I think I have discovered something that would help me to understand more of this “art” of doing theology in Christianity.

I become more convinced that Christian theology should never refrain from facing the hardest and toughest questions that a human being may ask. If it is true…

I heard three different versions of giving away relationships, which I call building relationship bridges.Returning the favor: I’ll introduce you to someone after you introduce me to someone.Mutuality: I’ll introduce you to someone if you’ll introduce me.Giving without expecting repayment: I’ll introduce you to someone for your benefit, not mine.

My friends were convinced that giving without expecting repayment was rare but powerful, and some of them did it naturally, never thinking it was an act…
