I am a Missionary from America serving in Nairobi, Kenya since 2003 on and off.  I have been living permanently in Kenya since 2006.  I develop programs for orphans and widows.  I work in 10 different villages in Kenya.  I assist widows in becoming self sustained and have recently started doing micro-finance. 

I have learned through experience to not go in to a village and pay for a project in its entirety but to have the villagers to give 80/20 70/30 money and volunteerism as this helps them to appreciate more.

I don’t recommend people from other countries to send money to people they don’t know because often times it is not used properly.  Most of the times the poor never receive any of its benefit.
