I am petrified!

My greatest fear in this is that my life is being sucked into this very black hole of my comfort. I am a victim of seeing prosperity as a sign of God’s favor because the Christian culture is such that it has subtly embedded this in my heart. I fear incarnation yet I know I am what I am because Christ came to me incarnate. I fear sacrifice and stretching beyond my comfort zone yet I know I am a product of His sacrifice. My ‘self’, instead of dying, has grown used to good worship music, a good sanctuary, good living environments, good friends, good sermons, and all in God’s good Name! And now, these very ‘blessings’ have held me captive- kept me from His purpose and reduced me to a signpost rather than a witness of His love, His sacrifice, His wounds, His shame, His obedience.

What shall my cup be if I give up my comforts and sell my estate to give to the poor? What shall be my loss or is it my gain? Will I gain if I give it all up or will I lose? My mind has been shaped to see it as loss now, loss tomorrow, loss forever. For my eyes have been dragged to the things that are seen rather than that which is unseen and to the things that are passing rather than that which is immortal.

Haven’t we all?

It’s a struggle for many, I believe. Of course I’m not saying being blessed and experiencing blessing is wrong or to be avoided. The hallmark of a Christian is gratefulness. But we must be grateful with open hands, willing to let go of that which the Lord gives. He gives and takes away. Blessed be the Name of the Lord.
