Great blog, Mary.  Thanks.

I see all three at work in my life and ministry - usually in constant tension with one another.  I’m obscure compared to a lot of Christian leaders, but I live life in a fish bowl in my own church as a ’popular’ leader on display and under scrutiny.  And scrutiny can sometimes reveal aspects of myself to people that aren’t popular, and can lead to forms of rejection!  It’s the ebb and flow of these three dynamics that keeps me humble as a leader and on my knees (or at least, I hope so)...

@ Pete_Houston:

I would agree that having rejection would keep you humble, and maybe that’s why there’s a cycle of popularity followed by rejection (or maybe said, misunderstanding). And then I think about why Jesus was crucified, because of jealousy. Perhaps the closer we walk with Him, the door opens for people to be jealous?
