There are not many reliable avenues to gain insight into the “real you” . . . but your words, like a mirror, reflect what is in your heart. A confession is actually an acknowledgment of something, either good or bad. An accurate confession is always marked by maximum clarity and verifiable truthfulness.

Those who do not confess “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth” might be purposefully deceitful, but they could also be so spiritually deluded that complete truthfulness is actually impossible for them to articulate. Since confessions are a necessary part of a Christ-honoring life and ministry, it is vital to know whether or not a confession is completely truthful. Typically omitted in an incomplete confession are facts that could produce greater consequences or a failure to mention the supportive sins that led to more significant failures.

Yet, when truthful confessions are a way of life, Christ is glorified.

I John 1:5-2:2 speaks in great detail about the importance of confession and the risks/consequences that come with failure to confess sin.  The writer of the letter was emphatically trying to get the audience (Johannine Community) to understand that we are liars when we say that we haven’t sinned, and we call God a liar.  I think this is an underpreached topic in churches today, and it is one that needs to come to the forefront in teaching/preaching.  When we fail to confess and repent of our sin, we are not in an intimate relationship with God.  In order for the forgiveness to take its full effect, we must acknowledge the fact that we are sinful.

“Confession is good for the soul, they say, well know it’s
my turn. I am willing to share all I learn some day, but some days I am not
willing to learn.” That song speaks volume about my confession. My confessions
to God are no problem. He knows every detail anyway, but confessions among
people…well we are commanded to confess our sins to one another, but everyone
may not be on the same maturity level to cover in prayer and they may use your
sin against you. It is imperative that we live life allowing the Holy Spirit to
minister to us to we can minister …confess to others. We become so others can
become…how do they know they can become better in Christ if we don’t share how
God has restored and delivered us.

At my church we have been partnering a Bible study with a Running for God group, thus the first part is actual running and the second is Bible study. It have never really thought about the body and soul being healthy so vividly before. This pairs your endurance for running with your endurance to stay on track for God. It is alot harder to stop running whene you realize you are letting God down. With this has come added confession. So often there is an attempt for our sins to be hidden from others and from God. What is the point? For God knows and sees all, we need them out in the open so we can work towards fixing that problem. God is a God of mercy and grace and daily I am indebted to this fact.

We should be able to have it all out in the open but unfortunately we are not as forgiving, nonjudgemental, or merciful as God. This makes confessing to one another difficult. Someone could have the very same fault as you or I but would still fail to see the freedom thatt our confession could mean for them. Rather they would pretend and have us think that only we have the faults we have.

As the old saying goes, "confession is good for the soul."  True conessions is a must for the Christian believer, if he/she is to be truthful to one self but most importantly to God.  All of us have some things in our lives that we could confess too.  But even today, if one decides to make a true confession who can we trust with our confession?  The Bible says, "if we confess our sins to God, that he is faithful and just to forgive us."  I like what the Bible says, I cannot trust anyone but him with my true confessions.  Because when I tell him he doesn’t tell anyone else or bring it back up again.

Amen. It’s so good that God doesn’t engage in spiritual extortionor blackmail. What will be great is when we return to a time when our integrity will allow us to confess to one another without our confessed faults becoming the definition of who we are in the eyes of those we’ve confessed to.

A Christian should continue to examine himself or herself on a day to day basis.  It is good to take a look at what you have done or said in the name of Lord to make sure that you are always in line with biblical teaching and not leading others astray.  Someone once said “Confession is good for the soul” and I find this to be true as I personally practice this in my day to day walk with the Lord. Confession is more than that just recognizing my sin.  It is also a time of acknowledging God’s goodness and mercy on my life. I find that a lot of people tend to not slow down long enough to examine their personal lives, some only prior to the Lord’s Supper.  Thank you for your reminder that we should teach and practice this often.

I agree with the emphasis on slowing down. Confession takes time and humility. Both are seemingly in short supply in 2011.

I believe very highly in the practice of confession.  I try to make confession a vital part in my daily petition to almighty God.  The old saying, "praying is good for the soul" may not be altogether biblically based.  But King David says in Psalm 51: 3, "For I acknowledge my transgressions:  and my sin is ever before me."  Confession is a must for the Christian believer because we all are guilty of the sin of omission and co-mission.  Most believers take a shower or a bath every day.  Just like we clean our physical bodies we must keep our spiritual clean as well.  1 John 1: 9 makes this very clear and gives us assurance that our God loves us so much.  "If we confesss our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all righteousness."

I think it is important to be truthful in your confessions especially when conversing with God. He already knows the truth. Sad part about it, some people think they can withhold from God. He already knows the intricate details, He just wants us to fully trust Him with everything.

As far as  confessions to one another...yes the bible says confess your sins to one another (James 5:16) but we forget the latter part of the scripture...and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Sometimes telling every detail of the sin is not necessary and it may even entice others away from God. Always be led by the spirit...when confessing. And remember they overcame by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony...their confessions...our confessions to one another.

Yes, always choose to be truthful, but be spiritual motivated by the intricate details of the confessions.

I agree we are suppose to confess to one another, but sometimes all the details given to the wrong person may backlash. The wrong person may use your information to blackmail you or stop you from getting certain positions in the church or evangelsitic field.

In terms of personal witness, telling the truth without embellishment or omissions is the best witness. It is true that one’s salvation is not dependent on our truthfulness. However, the person that one is speaking to may be listening, watching and deciding whether or not this belief one has in Christ Jesus is true, worth it or is everything the person is saying a lie. The person one is witnessing to is dependent on one’s truthfulness as complete as possible because if the person who is weighing whether or not to accept Christ based on one’s truthfulness, the witness is accountable for that person’s acceptance or rejection of Christ based on one’s witness. Remember Jesus said Mark7:20 "what comes out of a person, is what defiles the person"

Well said, however, when we consider Romans 7:21 Paul articulates a problem that many who profess faith in Christ have found themselves in, but it does not change the condition of their witness or relationship with God.  Does it mean that we should not aspire to live right no, as Paul said, "God forbid."  I understand your argument, but I also think that if falls on the side of law and not grace.  Grace stands in the place of me when I cannot stand.  As a witness for Christ, I think my humanity is my best witness because it allows others to see that no matter how far I fall down God is willing to reach down and pick me up.  As the psalmist said, "if I make my bed in hell you are with me."  While I agree that confession has its place, I also believe that the proper teaching of God’s grace to non-believers and believers will allow us to have a better love relationship with God.  What do I mean, the more I understand my humanity, the better I see God’s divinity.

Perfect truth without omissions is the best cleanser one can have. However, who do you tell this complete truth to? Some people can use what you say to destroy you. I know one person you can confess everything to and that person is our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

Some people do not confess some things because they do not trust the person they are confessing to. However, we have a Savior, we can confess all things to. Some people would rather confess things to a secular counselor than a senior pastor or a church leader because they are worried aboout the breach of confidence in some senior pastors or church leaders.

Salvation is not dependent on human action.  Confession is to release what previously held us bound.  Who do we confess to-- God--others--self.  Who do we need to make all things known to--God--others--self.  The realization of it is that God already knows and if we confess/release our sins before God then what do we hide.

I think one thing we must be cautious of is holding on to the law and not abiding in the grace of God.  There is a balance between the two and that is Christ crucified and resurrected for the redemption of humanity.  If we confess Christ, what wrong can we do that has not been laid before Christ and redeemed by Him already.  Not to say that we continue in sin, our love relationship with God would not allow that...

Wendy, I agree with you. Jesus is who we confess all to. Others may try to use what we say to ruin us. We need more trustworthy leaders, who we can confidently confess to and forgives us. If there is some judgment we may have to endure it is not because someone is trying to ruin us or blackmail us.

True confession is a sign of transfromation of a new convert as well as a believe in chrsit for many years. often times people will let pride and personal status get in the way of them coming clean of some issue in which just admitting her or she are wrong and go on with life. True confession as David speakes of in Psalms 51, a true repentent person is soulfully sorry and seeks to turn from that which has taken them down a very dark and gloomy road. Confession is unconfortable for a minute but is a life time of joy.
