I cannot believe that Lausanne dioes not have youth as one of the unreached groups. I believe that from my research and hands on experience that youth culture around the world (13 to 30 years old) is now a separate culture. They think about life, the world, truth, and the Christian faith so differently from previous generations. Yet so little is being done to reach youth (especially in the majority world). If we saw this younger generation as a separate culture then we would change the way we relate to, understand and transmit the Christian faith to them.

And so we are at a stage where so many young people are leaving the church all around the world because church and the Christian faith is becoming irrelevant in their culture. It is like a tidal wave has come in and hit the church and is taking a whole generation of people away and church leaders have got their head in the sand and are not acknowledging it.

Youth culture needs a separate tag in the new mission catergories. Remeber that in most of the countries of the world up to 65% of the population are under the age of 25

My overall comment will be focused on two areas.
First, I work with the youth culture in East Asia and I have worked with the youth culture in the USA for many years. Neither are the same, although there are some differences. But they are still very different. Saying this, I have a difficult time including the "Global Youth Culture" in the "Unreached" category. I believe this is too broad of a statement, and doesn’t clarify what youth in what location one is referring to. Saying youth in the West are unreached is, if using unreached definition by Joshua Project, is no accurate. At the same time, I don’t believe it’s effective to engage a strategy for the global youth culture when every youth culture in their various cultures are different in and of themselves. Every country needs to have a different strategy. There may be some similarities between cultures but dealing with a Muslim youth in Iran is much different than dealing with a youth in the USA born and raised in the Bible belt. Both need the Gospel but the avenue, other than proclaiming the Truth, will look different.

@ crosscampus_intl: Let me add an additional comment. Saying what I said, I do believe it should engaged as a topic but my hope is that it will have a more narrow focus. It’s a topic I believe that cannot be discussed adequately enough in a broad sense. It must be dealt with in a more narrow sense. For example, how to engage Western Youth, East Asian Youth and so forth. We shouldn’t forget this age group, no matter the culture they come from. We should seek to engage them, especially given, I have heard, that more than 80% of the people in the USA alone come to faith in Christ before they turn 18. My experience proves to me that the older one becomes, the less likely they will believe and follow Christ. It’s not impossible but just not as probable.

I pray doors will open for this topic to be discussed and more partnerships will be established for greater effectiveness in reaching youth, whether in USA, Middle East, East Asia or other places.

Sean,
There was a Youth section as part of the 2004 Lausanne Forum. I participated in that section. Why it has been left out for this major meeting is puzzling.

I think we need to start by understanding what young people understand in areas such as truth, sin, what the purpose of the Christian faith is, church etc. I have attached an article of one example of what I am talking about: The Hope That Young People Have in Following Christ. I have other articles like this on my website: https://www.youthmesh.org/articles/

Hi Sean,
I am interested in your comments. I was wondering what you thought were some of the keys and practices we can use to engage youth culture. If we think of youth as a culture that transcends geogrpahical regions, what are the languages, values, redemptive cultural entry points that we can use to connect them with Jesus Christ?
