Two of the most popular, unscriptural concepts accepted by many believers are the need to “forgive yourself” and the importance of “forgetting your sins.”

Many Christian leaders continue to propagate these unbiblical ideas, and best-selling books have spread these untruths throughout the Body of Christ. As a result, these two fallacies enjoy almost unquestioned acceptance by many believers. For example, a noted Christian psychologist and pastor stated the following on a denominationally sponsored radio broadcast: “There are many people I counsel who cannot forget their sins. I ask them to consider this: If the blood of Christ has been adequate to blot their sins from God’s presence and satisfy the holy nature of God, then surely they should be able to forgive themselves.”

In spite of the assertion by this well-meaning counselor that believers “should be able to forgive themselves,” this concept originates from worldly wisdom and has no biblical support. In addition, the implication that believers are to “forget their sins” is also unsubstantiated by Scripture and is contrary to teaching in God’s Word.

The degree I am aware of the grace God has provided for my sin debt, and how much it cost God, the more grace available to me to offer to those who offend me. I can’t give what I have not been given. The beauty of the Gospel.

@ moviepastor:

The idea that you should be able to forgive yourself of your own sins and that you should be able to forget them does in fact run counter to scripture.  Definately, there needs to be healing there.  However, you don’t need forgiveness from yourself to move on, you need forgiveness from God and the understanding that he does indeed forgive you.  This is what enables healing, His grace.  As far as forgetting your sin goes I’m not sure that’s entirely healthy to forget your past sin.  To know your area of weakness and to know the things that he continually saves you from makes you even more aware of his grace.

Forgetting our sins can lead us to forget how amazing it is that Jesus died for us. Remembering our sins helps us remember our forgiveness and it can be very helpful in our testimony. At the same time we should not be too focused on always rehashing our past mistakes. Remembering our past should lead us to focus on what Jesus has done, not how bad we used to be.

@ skh718:

I commit and have committed sins that have affect my life and the life of my family.  I will never forget certain past mistakes that have greatly affected my life.  I will never forget but I can’t ruminate on these mistakes.  I have asked for forgiveness from those I hurt and God.  I have accepted forgiveness but still find myself dwelling on these mistakes and condemning myself.  I think God wants me to learn from my mistakes, REPENT and move forward in my walk with Him.  I have to leave those sins at His feet and not carry them with me throughout my life.  I will not be an effective servant in His Kingdom if I don’t allow myself to experience the victory that come from forgiveness.

@ ajlt34:

It is best to seek forgiveness from God and from those that I have hurt in order to learn the most from the mistake and to allow God to have the glory in the forgiveness of sin.  When we try to "forgive ourselves", we take glory away from God and put the power in our own hands, and this can become a dangerous thing.  It is also good to remember these mistakes as a means of preventing them from occurring in the future.  When we forget our past, we are setting ourselves up to repeat the mistakes.

@ wjw88:

When I ask forgiveness in true repentance I know He forgives.  I learn from my mistakes but I can’t carry the shame around with me the rest of my life.  I think it is important to allow myself to be forgiven by God and accept His grace but I don’t think God wants me to live in shame and pain caused by past regrets.

Accepting any sort of beliefs such as forgiving oneself and forgetting the past without question is unhealthy.  It can be harmful and cults could be made when the ’followers’ do not use the mind God has provided them.  Thank you for providing this article that encouraged us to think through what these two commonly held beliefs really mean along with their implications.  We should be able to understand what we believe-though there are some things that is beyond our understanding, it does not mean we can always answer a question about our faith with "thats the way it is".

I humbly admit that I do not agree with everything that was mentioned in the article and there were a few scripture references that did not relate with the concept explained; however, it made some excellent points about not relying on oneself for salvation but on God.  I use the word salvation because forgivness of one’s sins comes when he/she, through the urging of the Holy Spirit, realizes his/her helplessness and need for a Savior asks for forgiveness for past sins along with claiming Jesus as Lord of his/her life.

I agree that our salvation is set in stone and it does not change depending upon how we feel that day.  Just like God’s love, our salvation is constant.  Our relationship as well as our maturity in this new walk of life can develop and grow (or go downhill for a season), but not our salvation or God’s love/forgiveness of our sins.

I am so glad that you said that we must trust God and in His promises that He outlines in Scripture.  I will say, however, that the notion of forgiving ourselves does not necessarily have to mean we are not trusting God and His forgiveness.  I think that our guilt over our past mistakes can hold us in bondage.  There are so many things that can hold us as slaves and guilt is one of them.  Though we are set free from the life and death of Jesus Christ I do believe that God needs to break those chains for us in a sense.  Salvation and freedom happens in the first moment we believe but living in that freedom is a process that takes time and in attending to our walk with Christ, God will provide that freedom from that guilt and that is what I think is sometimes referred to as ’forgiving oneself’.

In this article I do agree that there is nothing we can do in the process of being forgiven by God but I disagree that we should not practice the act of forgiving ourselves.  Truly understanding that God is able and even willing to forgive us is the greatest act of Grace that one can receive however if we are unable to forgive ourselves than we can never fully trust God for our complete forgiveness.  As humans I believe we are unable to forget the wrongs we have done, we can learn to live with them and even deal with the consequences from them but I firmly believe that if we trust God we can forgive ourselves as He has forgiven us. So many people are unable to allow themselves to serve God because of the guilt and shame they feel from past mistakes.  But knowing that we have been totally forgiven by God, and that our sins will not be held against us, allows us to be able to see that we are worthy to serve others in the precious name of Jesus.

I think that you are correct in that the thoughts about forgetting your sins are often propagated throughout the United States especially. I love the phrase:

A believer who focuses on the past has taken attention away from the present, the time frame in which authentic, spiritual growth takes place.

This is so true about attempting to remember sins and also other focuses that we often find ourselves being drawn to instead of God. Thus our spiritual growth is stunted and therefore we might have missed an opportunity to bring glory to God. As our eyes need to be consistently looking upward to His will, I believe that he also wants us to not ignore the world that He created.

God creates instances daily for each of us to bring Him love, bring Him glory, and it is our job to be both faithful and obedient to his will for our lives.

Forgiving youself and forgiving your sins, is a process that is essential in the healing tranformation of salvation. The deliverance of being set free from our past and given another chance to be reconciled back to the father. Forgining yourself in my opinion is the first big step for the new convert. the question one might ask themsleves, How could I have been that lost or that bad? We’ve all sinned a come short of Gods Glory. Understanding that we are targets for the devil, it is not how bad we were, its how good God is to have a vessel that will redeem man back to Him

Your statement " In addition, the implication that believers are to “forget their sins” is also unsubstantiated by Scripture and is contrary to teaching in God’s Word." gives me pause.  In 2 Corinthians 5:17, we are new creatures in Christ and old things have past away, all things are made anew. If we don’t forget our sins and forgive ourselves we are saying that we choose to stay in past in our old sins. If we have truly repented and turned from our sins...God has forgiven us, so why wouldn’t we forgive ourselves. If Jesus died for the sin of man, than there is not sin you can’t release unto God to forget. Always choose to be a new creature and dwell in the old of what use to be.
