China Missing…

China
As one of the 7 volunteers from mainland China, I experienced all the procedure that the government frighten, threaten, surviliance, confiscated passports and block the volunteers and delegates.
I realized this is a big issue before the day we will take flight and I made the media notice the big situation before I went to the airport on Oct. 10th . The police man were very angry that I revealed the truth.
Because I began to work with one of the China IDDs in March. I knew some details of the delegates chosen.
Originally, there were dispute among IDDs on how to choose the delegates. Actually, only those who had been with Chinese church for a long period can understand who can really represent Chinese church. This IDD is the man. He knew House church leaders are really faithful on the Great Mission and made the suggestion to the Commitee also to choose House church leaders. But at the same time, STPM and  CCC can’t sign the L Covenant and only can be Observers. They feel not good to be observers and refused to attend the congress and made a rebuke letter to the congress. After the letter, the pressure from government came to the delegates and volunteer and became more and more heavy.
The different between official STPM( and CCC) and House Church is more obvious after this big event.
The government need to face the House Church officially. Before, they just look House Church as invisible and ignore it.
Also, those who are outside China should notice this big issue and pay more attention on how to face the reality. You must choose one of them. You can’t just balance the 2. This III L meeting is the most powerful proof.
Thanks for concerning China!
Liu Guan

Dear Brother Liu Guan,
Thank you for your response. You are a dear brother, but misguided. You are passionate but need to calm down and see the big picture.

What is your heart’s desire?

Do you want war with the Chinese Government?  Do you think for a moment that you and some of the House Church and Chinese diasporas leaders with chips on their shoulders are in any position to have a power struggle with the Chinese Government? Do you want to provoke the Chinese Government at the expanse of the billion lost souls in China?

A word about the chips on your shoulders is this. Christian is not the only one who suffered during the Cultural Revolution and the early stages of Communist rule. That is the nature of revolution. And you want another one? Now? With the help from our brothers from the West?

All our collective suffering is nothing compare to the suffering of Christ on the cross. He suffered willingly for the lost souls. Do you want to wear your suffering like a batch of honor demanding sympathy? Do you think you are entitled to vengeance against the Chinese Government and its Communist rulers, at the cost of losing the lost souls?

Do you think the gratification of martyrdom and victimhood with self inflicted suffering will shame the Chinese Government?  Do you think for a moment leveraging the prestige of Lausanne Movement will force the Chinese Government to yield an inch? Do you know your self-serving interest can cause the demise of the Lausanne Movement, making it looks like an imperialism tool of old.

There are millions of brothers and sisters and their pastors who chose to register and join the STPM/CCC because they heed the biblical teaching; “Submit yourselves for the sake of the Lord to every human authority…For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of the foolish.” (2 Peter 2:13-15) Your brothers in the STPM/CCC are doing good and millions have already come into the saving grace of the Lord.

It defies common sense for some of your House Church leaders to claim exclusive representation of the Church in China. Your man, the China IDDs chose to humiliate their brothers and provoke the Chinese Government knowing full well the dire consequences.

The Chinese Government did not ignore the House Church for the last 20 years. This is their way to be nice to you. They turn a blind eye away from their own policies and let you prosper. They were hoping you follow the biblical teaching to do good and be a positive force to the changing Chinese society.

Before the retirement of President Hu the Chinese Government I believe is very close to make structural change to enhance civil liberty and civil society, provided there is security, maturity and stability. Your heros in the IDD have just managed to tie the hands of the Government, giving voice to the extremist in the Government to clamp down on the Church in China. We may have to wait for the next generation of top leaders to tackle the religious issues in China.

I do not know what Billy Graham is thinking. But I am sure he is no fool. He made a deliberate and open invitation to the STPM/CCC pastors to visit his headquarters the week before the Cape Town 2010 opening, in direct and frontal contradiction to the IDDs decisions.

My daughter let her baby feed herself using a spoon. The baby manages to put food up her nose instead of in her month. That is how God in His love allowed us to make a mess of things.

China Missing…

I hope some factual information will help brothers and sisters to discern and pray for the salvation of billions in China and the Chinese Government.

Back in 1988, Leighton Ford, my fellow Board member of World Vision and Ed Dayton, the Senior VP of World Vision, who were in charge of organizing Lausanne 1989 asked and I agreed to be the special envoy to handle the China delegation issue with the Chinese Christian communities and the Government.

By April 1989 all parties concerned including all relevant governments departments sign off on the plan to send 300 Chinese Christian leaders, half of them selected by Bishop Ding and half by House Church leaders. We were chartering 2 planes flying direct between Guangzhou and Manila. By early June we have to call off the plan due to the bloody confrontation of the students in Beijing with the Government.

Six months ago I was briefed off the record on invitation process of the Chinese delegates. I found that the selection criteria were humiliating to the registered church leaders and provoking to the CCC and TSPM leaders. The lot was casted. The conflict elevated to the State Department level. The Government reaction was predictable.

Despite of the fact that the Lausanne Movement and their very top leaders are not politically motivated, the process by accident or by design entangled into the sphere of the geo-political struggles of China and the West, thus creating impediment to the spread of the Good News in China.

However the Chinese delegation of the registered church leaders invited by Billy Graham Crusade to visit their headquarters last week before the opening of the Congress has no problem in their visit.

Extraordinary effort by the Chinese Government to understand Christianity has bear fruit with the help of many who worked with God’s help behind the scene. It is beginning to accept Christianity as a universal faith beneficial to the Chinese society and not an excuse for imperialism of the West.  Many can observe the positive shift in China but structural change takes time.

Why is “China Missing” twice? Only God knows. We rest in His love for the many Chinese and the whole world.

As a Chinese Christian in living in the U. S. but connected to house churches in China (ref. my evangelical website: http://www.godoor.net/jidianlinks/eng.html), I feel very sad that the Chinese Christians who were invited to this conference were barred from attending by force.  A few of those who were stopped by police are my close personal friends, and I know they are law-abiding citizens. In the past few days I have read a lot on the Chinese blogsphere about what happened to them (I collected the related Chinese blog postings: http://newdesai.appspot.com/?url=jidian/?p=48763 . In Chengdu at the airport, Wang Yi (an elder and a well-known Christian writer) was dragged by six policemen violently for many yards and pushed into a car, when he asked them to show him any legal paperwork. He was bruised and carried away by force, and spent a few hours in a police station. The police videotaped the whole incident, and at the airport a few Christian young ladies posed and smiled and reminded each other that "we should leave the history beautiful images"... Pastor Paul Peng in Chengdu called the day "a meaningful spiritual retreat".  The Chinese government accused that the conference organizers “secretly extended multiple invitations to Christians who privately set up meeting points” and thus failed to honor China’s policy of domestic control over religious activities. However, according to Doug Birdsall via New York Times, China’s official Christian representatives had been invited but had declined to attend, and the state-sanctioned "3-Self" Church was also involved in the process of selecting participants.  Only the Chinese government would believe that the "3-Self" Church, which surely does not agree with the Lausanne Covenant, is the sole "legal representatives of China’s Christians".

Even to access this video is very difficult! After two days of trying several VPNs can I finally view this video. When I saw the chair uphold for us, I could not hold my tear any longer. I know that we are really there with all our brothers and sisters, even though we could not be on site.

Lord ’s Love never fails!
