When believers are at peace, they are free from anxiety and worry; and consistent prayer is integral to that result, as Philippians 4:6 indicates. The word for "anxiety" or "worry" in this verse means "to be stretched apart" or "to be distracted." Notice that Paul does not say that the answer to "being stretched out" is setting priorities and following them. There is, obviously, nothing wrong with setting priorities and following them, but the scriptural alternative to worry is to pray about everything.

This is such a good reminder to pray and depend on God. Anxiety has become a huge problem in ministry. There are always expectations and pressures. We have to remember that our ultimate goal is to please God, not everyone around us. Prioritizing is definitely important, but depending on God for wisdom and strength is even more important.

One of the most beautiful aspects of being a Pastor is being able to see people’s lives before being saved change right before my very eyes when saved.  People once negative, hateful, depressed, hopeless etc now full of life,  Joyful, at peace, bold among other characteristics.  A person becoming a new creation and then continuing on a journey of christian maturity to attain the full measure of what GOD intended for them to be. A person that could be used by Him to influence others in a positive way.

When one is joyful and worry free one is resting in the divine peace of God. Joyful is that we have moved from happiness to being spiritfilled. when one is joyful they rest in the peace and understanding of a good God. The happiness they use to seek in material weath and prosperity now rest in the reign of God.

Being at peace is a sense of being free.  It allows you to think more clearly.  Anxiety is nothing but distraction.  I like to think of it as an obstacle I have to climb. I noticed you mentioning Paul’s answer to being stretched out are setting priorities and following them.  Then you stated, the scriptural alternative to worry is to pray about everything.  Even though we pray about it we must not be ignorant and think we are not suppose to do anything else.  I believe God wants us to make preparation.  For example, our lights get cut off because of lack of finance. Do we just pray and hope the Lord bring someone through or do we go out and seek assistance in places God leads us?  Most of the time people fail to see the real message and believe praying is all they have to do but there is some work behind prayer.  Do anyone agree?

@ sashe:

I do not think we are called to be lazy and sit back.  However, we do like to take everything upon ourself.  With our selfishness we leave the Holy Spirit out of what we do.  When a problem arises we worry about it, because we feel we can fix it.  Instead, we need to step aside and ask the Holy Spirit to work through us, not us fix the problem under our own will.

@ CWest:

I think the main thing in all  of this is trust.  Who are you trusting in yourself or God.  When one pray hopefully the answer come, and through this prayer, the Holy Spirit is in it.  One way we are led is through God’s Word.  As you say in Phil, it does say don’t worry or get excited about anything.  But God does put things out here for our usage. So being led by the Holy Spirit we use them and find peace in what we have done. let go after that, trust that things will work out for the good to those who love the Lord.

@ sashe:

Think the scripture Philippians 4:6...be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God...is saying not to worry nothing but go to God for everything and trust the He will bring deliverance no matter the situation...I agree with CWest that we try to fix things ourselves and don’t wait on God or rely on God for every answer to a problem.

@ JourneywithCHRISTie:

Let us look at the word "obedience" in refernce to peace. Obedience to God leads to peace and is the first step to peace with God and others. When we are obedient to the word of God there is an inward peace. But when we are disobedient to the word of God there is turmoil on the inside. This disobedience is called "sin" and this separates us from God. Peace is powerful and we need a greater understanding of its purpose and power.

@ lmorrison:

I don’t think the conversation was over odedience or disobedience. Even in obedience people worry about making ends meet. My response was saying that we are not to be anxious about those things...take everything to God. But most time we as Christians don’t we try in our own strength to handle situations instead of taking it to God in supplication and thanksgiving.

@ CWest:

We do leave out the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the one who is our guide, teacher, and comforter. Just think if we allowed the Holy Spirit to do the work, what a testamony we would have in the earth.

Thank you for your posting. Reminding us as Christians that our position for solutions is in the word of God. The scriptual alternative to worry is prayer. we all need to pray and if we are praying we need to pray more.
