The MediaNet.org is a recently established network in UK of Christians in the media. I had the privilege last week of being guest speaker at their regional meeting in London. It was a delight to share the Gimlekollen story and the vision of Christian media presence, media awareness and media mission with so many committed Christians in the UK media world.
It seems to me that this network is an attractive networking model for Christians in the workplace:
Visiting London coincided in time with my reading of Chris Wright’s exciting new book on The Mission of God’s People: A Biblical Theology of the Church’s Mission (Zondervan 2010) (LINK). As readers of this blog post may know, the author is Chair of the Lausanne Theology Working Group and of the Committee for The Cape Town Commitment.
The chapter on “People Who Live and Work in the Public Square” is highly relevant to this blog post. It is worth reflecting on the following key points from this chapter:
May God give each one of us the grace to make a real difference in the public square, both as individuals living out our calling and as Christians networking within various fields.

Hi Lars
The old confrontational approach got us no where. What it did get us was, although a bad rap, a well deserve done. The post colonial Constantine era is upon us. In this era every believer has an opportunity to showcase their faith among all the rest like never before. We will move from argument to conversation, from defeating someone to watching Jesus win them, from secret or not so secret agendas to deep relationships where dialogue is important. The playing field just got level. From here Jesus leads us to authenticity in a world where the church has had real difficulty leading before.

@ windjammer:
It seems to me, Bryan, that we need to distinguish between a confrontational attitude (which we should reject) and a confrontational message (which we cannot and should not avoid). But this confrontational message of holiness, sin and conversion should also challenge us personally, otherwise we easily end up as self-righteous...
These ’points of tension’ must always be balanced with ’points of contact’, as we can see both from the examples of Jesus and the Apostles.
From the perspective of "everyone having a worldview, everyone is a believer - but in what and why?", the playing field is certainly level. Therefore, we must neither be only pre-modern, modern nor postmodern in our approaches, but holistic, wise, authentic and biblically rooted.

@ Lars_Dahle:
I’d agree, Lars - and the biggest challenge for us in this multiplicity of belief systems is authenticity. If we act and treat people in a way that is consistent with our beliefs, we will make a difference and see transformed lives.
Easily said, less easily done :)

Thanks, Russ, for sharing these wise comments with us. This is certainly deeply challenging: ... To live authentic lives - truly human, as forgiven sinners, depending on His Spirit - lives which may attract others to our Authentic Lord.

Thanks, Samuel, for your affirmative comments and for your key reference to being salt (Math 5:13) ...!
Let me quote about salt from the new book:
"If a piece of meat goes rotten, it’s no use blaming the meat. That’s what happens when meat is left out on its own. The question to ask is, Where is the salt? ....
... The question to ask is, Where are the Christians? Where are the saints who will actually live as saints - God’s different people, God’s counterculture - in the public square? Where are those who see their mission as God’s people to live and work and witness in the marketplace, and pay the cost of doing so?"
(Chris Wright: The Mission of God’s people (Zondervan 2010) p. 236)
This quote is indeed both challenging and encouraging!

@ Lars_Dahle:
Lars, one of the particular challenges we face in the UK is helping the Church understand
1 How media works - that it is a diverse and changing channel of communication, that has via the internet and social media placed power and influence back into the hands of the many, rather than the few
2 Why it is simplistic to blame many of the ills of society on ’the media’ and its portrayal of our lives. Many Christians would rather complain about the pernicious effect of ’the media’ than realise they have power to change things both as consumers of media, and as people who can get involved as salt and light and do things differently.
Thankfully, the network is a huge encouragement to help us all work together, stay focused on Christ and do our jobs with skill and integrity to show that there is a better way. But we have a long task ahead of us!

@ Russell_B:
Thanks, Russell, for highlighting the importance of media education in our churches. Yes, it is crucial for the Christian community to understand the opportunities of the new social media and also to avoid simplistic interpretations.
I would also like to add that media awareness (in a broader sense of the word) should be a high priority for us as media people when adressing our various Christian communities. I have suggested a way forward in my blog post Media Awareness: A Forgotten Dimension in Mission.

I had never truly thought or realized that God, indeed, created the public square and audits, governs and most interesting of all REDEEMS IT. No wonder we are commanded to pray for those who are in authority! And it sometime, so much easier and one could even say "fun" to mock or make fun of our authorities instead of respecting them and lifting our hearts in loving prayer for them.
So let us do just that, lift our hearts in prayer right now, for those who God has chosen to be in authority of our countries!

Thanks, Veraly, for your open and deepfelt comment. We certainly need to take our responsibility to pray for those in authority more seriously!
It also seems to me that we as Christians (individually and as communities) need both to pray more together - and reflect more together - on how to be salt and light in the public square.

I agree completely, we need to be active as Christians in the Public sphere, in order to be salt and light and have a healthy influence in our context. May God help us to overcome the unbiblical division between clergy and laity in Christian witness.

Thanks, Tonica, for your affirmative comment. Yes, we do need to emphasise the fact that all of us as Christians have a calling from God.
Speaking for myself, I have benefitted a lot from reflecting on the following helpful definition of calling:
"Calling is the truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that everything we are, everything we do, and everything we have is invested with a special devotion and dynamism lived out as a response to his summons and service." (Os Guinness)
